I already have too many books on the go to start reading another!
William Styron's Sophie's Choice is an excellent choice. It's certainly not uplifting, but it's quite phenomenal.
My vote's in for Dune. I read it four or five years ago and don't remember much other than that I liked it. I think I'd understand the political nuances better now as well.
I suggest Catch-22 by Joesph Heller. Very funny novel with a dark side that is appropriate for the world today. Also, a great freethinking protagonist.
