When I was 6 or 7 years old I went to a funeral of family friends who dies in a car crash. The Minister who was talking about "Gods Will" got me to thinking. Also he said god works in mysterious ways that we can not understand. That was the moment I became an Atheist. I live with a christian family and just stayed quite about it for years. I never knew anything about Buddhism but I had Buddhist beliefs. Many years later I picked up a book called "The Buddha Said" and I was blown away. One of the things the Buddha said was "Don't talk to me about god. You have no way of knowing if he exist or not." I was sold. Buddhism is just a guide to living your life with respect for all living creatures. Living a moral life with love for others. No heaven or hell. Everyone has the seed of the Buddha in them. I certainly did and studying, meditation you grow with the intent of trying to become a Buddha yourself. I'm not there yet but I will continue on the path the best I can.

One of my biggest difficulty is I can't get over my hate for people like Sara Palin and Rush. lol

Well, welcome to the site, and the Atheist Buddhists group may be of interest to you.
WOW! I consider myself an atheist with a mindfulness meditation practice - had no idea there were atheist buddhists. I'll have to check out this group.
Even the Dahli Lama is an atheist.
Welcome John. Buddhism sounds great. I probably should do some research so I don't have to say "Buddhism sounds great".
Even thinking people need a little structure in their lives. I have been a Buddhist all my like and I didn't even know what Buddhism was.
Check out the UTUBE lower on the bottome of this page
I respect Buddhism. It is what religion should be, if it must exist. It is a lifestyle though and there are some elements of it which are not agreeable with everyone. That is why I disagree with statements like the following.

"Everyone has the seed of the Buddha in them."
I read a book about things the Buddha said. The first thing to impress me was his statement that no one can possibly know if there is or isn't a god. Buddha is not a god. This is a mistake most people make. He is revered and the world is full of Buddhas. I am working on becoming a Buddha myself. His best belief is the desire is the biggest thing that makes people unhappy. Desire does not refer to sex. The desire for a new car, a new house, a better job and the desire for country that start war for oil, new territory etc. All ready this has made a big difference in my life. When someone does something to hurt or harm me I no longer get mad. I respect all living things.
My spiritual journey included a brief study and practise of buddhism. I still meditate today and find it very cleansing and relaxing. A person who follows the 8 fold path can live a very rightous life.

What turned me away was the fact that the Dahli Lama has a young boy held in exile whom he thinks is the reincarnation of some buddhist holy man. To me that makes my skin crawl.

Keep the good that works...and trash the rest. Its ok to disagree with the right wing puppetheads like Palin & Rush. To hate them is just a waste of energy.
Believe nothing, O monks, merely because you have been told it ... or because it is traditional, or because you yourselves have imagined it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings -- that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.

I could not have said it any better. The problem is that people who need to hear and see this will never visit the site. Keep up the good work. I have a history of manic depression and the practice of Buddhism has had a very positive effect. It was very lonesome growing up in East Tennessee as a Atheist. I didn't dare tell anyone. A gay young boy who is an Atheist in Tennessee was dangerous and social taboo. I'm convinced that I am the luckiest man a live. My partner and I have been together for over 23 years.
Buddhism, my current state of understanding, is seeking inner peace. It's a good belief, I like it, although I don't follow it.
