Mauritania remains one of the main strongholds of slavery.  The west African country has one of the highest proportions of slaves in the world.   It is estimated there are currently 30 million slaves in the world.  In absolute numbers, India and China have the most slaves in the modern world.  Followed by Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia.

Location of  Mauritania  (dark blue)– in Africa  (light blue & dark grey)– in the African Union  (light blue)The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is 30% Arab/Berber, 40% Black Moors, and 30% Afro-Mauritanians, non Arab speaking Africans.  The country is about 100% Muslim.  The country is believed to use torture as an intrinsic part of the legal culture.  Not that the US has moral standing on that issue.

Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mkhaitir was arrested last year for writing an article thought to be critical of Mohammed.  He is 28 years old and also known as Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mohamed.  Mkhatir has been sentenced to death based on Sharia law and is to be shot.  I am not sure that the Koran specifies shooting for apostasy - there were no guns in ancient Arabia.  This is to be the country's first execution for apostasy.

Mkhatir states it was not his intention to harm the prophet, and that he was misunderstood.  From Moroccoworldnews, "The journalist had questioned some of the decisions the prophet had made during the holy wars. He also said that Mauritania allows a discriminatory caste system, an extremely delicate subject in a country with deep social and racial divisions."

Without reading the article, it's hard to judge what Mkhatir is in trouble for saying.  So far, I have not identified that he is an apostate from Islam, as opposed to being a critic of Mauritanian slave culture who invoked the prophet in his writing.

In modern Islam, ISIS is the latest Islamic group to promote slavery, including reports of ISIS Jihadist-led slave brothels - "Thousands of Iraqi women have already been forced into sex slavery at the brothels , with as many as 3,000 women and girls been taken captive from the Yazidi tribe in Iraq over the course of the militants’ offensive across the region, according to the daily." - Interesting, considering the Muslim take on sexual mores, but apparently OK if the women are nonmuslim slaves - Daily Mail gives a price list and rules for slave mongering.   I imagine that anyone proposing to criticize slavery or the prophet in an ISIS-held territory would not become known internationally, just taken out and executed.
