In the mid-1970s Congress sent the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) out to the states for ratification and a political battle ensued. Due to my then-deceased mother's influence in my life, I was active in that effort and spoke with hundreds of men.
Most men supported it. Some balked but came around when I pointed out that if they became ill, their families would have to get along on their wives' incomes, which were then about 60% of mens' incomes for similar work.
A few men knew things would change more than they wanted and told me I was crazy. One man felt more endangered than all the others; he looked me in my eyes and called me a traitor. (He left and I laughed.)
The ERA failed ratification but much has changed. How will morality change?
