Howdy. My name is Michael Hawkins and I'm one of the people running the group Atheists of Maine. (I have an account under my own name, but I created this one for my group.) Over the past few months we've been very active. We've had a handful of monthly meetings (and will continue to hold them), been interviewed in the local media (once in the papers, twice on radio), and volunteered our time putting together food baskets this past Thanksgiving. Our latest endeavor involves a polar dip and an organization called Camp Sunshine, and we could really use all the help we can get.
Here's the scoop: We're doing a polar dip in a few weeks (Feb 9) for this amazing organization, Camp Sunshine. It's basically a retreat here in Maine for children with life threatening illnesses; they're there for the kids, but also for the families, even if the child tragically passes away. We're hoping to find ourselves in the top tier of fundraisers, but our efforts have slowed recently, so any help we can get is very welcome.
The deets: Camp Sunshine is a highly rated non-profit, so there should be no worry to the way the money will be spent. They've organized this fundraiser through crowdrise.com, so none of the money goes through Atheists of Maine or me. (Well. One person gave me $20 cash. It was promptly donated in his name.) While we're doing to polar dip (East End Beach, Portland, Maine) on February 9th, the fundraising goes until March 31st. Below are some links.
