BLACK ATHEISTS OF AMERICA HONORED WITH $10,000 AWARD FROM STIEFEL FREETHOUGHT FOUNDATION
(New York City) - Black Atheists of America, BAAm, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation has been awarded by the Stiefel Freethought Foundation (SFF) with a major grant to assist BAAm in providing science supplies to the science programs of ten underfunded schools.
This partnership between SFF and BAAm marks the official kick-off of to BAAm’s Science Cubed program.
The aim of Science Cubed is to strengthen the educational resources in science classrooms for children who come from low-income neighborhoods. The SFF Grant will permit BAAm to achieve this goal by making possible donations of science classroom supplies to high schools that illustrate a need for improved resources.
"Todd Stiefel, president of the SFF, says he was delighted to select BAAm. “Black Atheists of America’s Science Cubed program is a program that will create positive change in the lives of students. Getting kids interested in the sciences will open up a world of wonder, and can ultimately lead to career opportunities that can help to advance our society. We’re happy to support BAAm in this effort.”
Ayanna Watson, President of BAAm, says she’s excited to get started in the fall. “We’re in the process of selecting nearly a dozen schools to donate equipment. We were able to give squid dissection kits, DVDs, and other materials to the students, allowing them to learn about their own waterways and wildlife. We want to do this kind of thing for other students around the country.”
Black Atheists of America is dedicated to bridging the gap between atheism and the black community. BAAm seeks to build a stronger and more diverse atheist community by encouraging black atheists to be open about their religious beliefs.
