We've all been captivated - and horrified - by what's going on in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, MO (for those from out of the area, Ferguson is a northern inner-ring [inside Interstate 270] suburb of STL City, which itself is a completely independent city from STL County dating back to 1876). The use of militarized police - and the many, many calls from Internet commentators DEMANDING martial law - is, to say the least, disturbing. Even frightening.

But the use of militarized police isn't limited to Ferguson; it's been in use EVERYWHERE in the alleged "land of the free and home of the brave". My buddy David 2 - the son of a cop and state trooper himself - asks "why DO suburban police forces NEED this stuff" in this week's BRUTALLY HONEST commentary: http://brutallyhonestcolumn.blogspot.com/2014/08/week-of-08182014.html

As always, your thoughts and opinions are welcome, either here or on David's page. And if you're TRULY concerned about this, feel free to share this and spread it around. There are some questions that NEED to be ANSWERED!

Well, from what I've read on NPR and other news sites, the military is now selling all their "surplus" equipment to the highest bidding cities. In other words, dirt cheap. Cities like St. Louis and Albuquerque are spending tax payer dollars on crap they don't need. As psychologists have pointed out (roll play) when you dress the part, you're more apt to play the part. These cities bought toys and now want to play with them. The best way to stop all this "let's play army" nonsense is to shoot your local and state reps a "stop this or I'll actively work to un-elect you" phone call, letter, email, and snarky remark on their facebutt page.
Larry, I read that as '.. nonsense is to shoot your local and state reps'. Lol

LMAO!!! Maybe another option?

Larry is right as to why this is all happening. I've even read that if the cops can't buy the wartime toys dirt cheap the government will give them away rather than dismantle and destroy them. Anytime you have Army toys you want to play with them.

This is a worrisome development.  The police are here to protect us, not to be the occupying forces.

I wonder what role that development of us/them divide had in the killing in Fergusun?  If the police, rather than being an occupying force, were community-based?

If the town cleans up its act, and if the people of Fergusun become active in the election process, maybe it's a moment to change for the better.

Police are no longer your friendly, neighborhood, patrolman, who used to know you and your family. Seems they've turned into a bunch of thugs who can't be bothered. If the police know you, in this area, it's usually because you've had a lot of trouble with the law.
