The Johnson Amendment is under attack. https://ffrf.org/news/action/item/29883-ask-congress-to-protect-the...
This secular amendment bars religious establishments from endorsing or opposing political candidates. The current theocratic administration is attacking separation of church and state. If churches are permitted to endorse or oppose political candidates then tax exemption status should be removed. I think churches should have to pay taxes regardless since they are for profit institutions.
This pic says it all. Apparently that prayer session was in response to the scrutiny Donald Jr is under. I find it deeply disturbing that our political leaders resort to this as a means of dealing with adversity.
Yes, they are doing their damndest to re-write history and prove that America was founded as a "Christian nation." I went to school with a man who claims even today that the bible was used early on as a Weekly Reader, and that publication didn't come along until somewhere around 1912. Only a theist would see such an early need for this.
Worth repeating: the myth of America as a specifically "Christian" nation founded on Christian principles was manufactured in the '30s and '40s by big business and their hired pastors, in order to oppose labor regulations and other aspects of the New Deal. Individual responsibility and individual salvation were made out to be "founding principles", opposing "pagan statism".
Thank you for the link. Through the reviews i was able to get a good idea of what the book was about. Unfortunately i will never read it as the focus of my studies already have given me a stack of unread books!
An excellent book which I've read and recommend without hesitation.
The Church of Scientology is quite wealthy due to their tax exempt religion status. They charge members exorbitant amounts to work their way up the hierarchy. They also demand a sizeable portion of all members income. Mormons do that as well.
Many people vie for theocracy in a veiled manner though. Anti abortion, denying birth control, denying sex education, promoting " Intelligent Design " in the class room, denying terminally ill people the right to die with dignity, calling evolution a theory and the list goes on.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Instead they give sermons which state "GODS" position.
Simple, concise, clear, There is much eloquence in three words...I do think however or perhaps just hope that there are those whom have to ability to stop it.
Augustine was one of many early xians who wanted us to think of sexual union as a bad thing. His progeny walk among us today. :-(
