I think that Kim Jong Un, dictator of North Korea, is a brilliant con man who completely fooled Donald Trump. Kim, like his father and grandfather of the same name, has no intention of "completely, verifiably, and permanently denuclearizing" North Korea. His own survival depends on his nuclear deterrent and he knows it. Without it, John Bolton and Mike Pompeo would be trying convince Trump of the need for an immediate preemptive attack against North Korea, and Trump would not be hard to convince. Kim only wants to play for time and get concessions like Trump's cancellation of joint military exercizes between the U.S. and South Korea.
Don't get me wrong. I am a long-time member of Peace Action and I supported the Iran nuclear deal, if only because it would have prevented the mullahs from developing nuclear weapons for several more years. Most likely, Iran will soon decide to restart its nuclear weapons program.
But North Korea already has nuclear-armed missiles that apparently can reach any part of the U.S. What do you think we could, or should, do about it?
Trump has enough wool over his peepers to make a cardigan. The very fact that he called off the joint war exercises which the US and South Korea have held for ages is indicator enough that he's either clueless or doing precisely what Putin and Kim and Sze want him to do. They have never liked those games, any more than they like the close relationship South Korea has had in the past with the US. This is made worse by the fact that I doubt Trump knows ANYTHING about previous attempts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, or the fact that the Kims have reneged on every deal they ever cut, regardless of which administration was negotiating it.
The blunt end of the stick is that Trump doesn't know from shit. He's insulting and disaffecting our allies while he plays directly into the hands of Vladimir Putin and this plans to disrupt democracy in the US and elsewhere. Believe me, the temptation to make a metaphor to a rabid dog and what should be done with it is very strong in me at the moment, and with good reason.
@Homer, It scared me when Trump gave Kim those concessions; now, other little Banty Roosters who have submitted to enforced de-weaponization will climb on the opportunity to flex their muscles. Rockets, bombs, bullets, and swords will strike from all directions, especially if we alienate our friends. We have not had World Wars on our lands before and I am not so confident we will remain safe from them now, under these circumstances.
Another thing that scares me is the support Trump gives people such as the KKK. I can't even imagine how our nation will overcome another epic episode of such bigotry.
Why are the churches, the preachers, and congregations not standing against the rise of another wave of hatred by religious?
@Loren, I share your feelings of "a metaphor to a rabid dog and what should be done with it.
I live in the northern woods right on the WA. border with Idaho, where the Aryan Nation had a conclave and was finally run off with the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center, only to be replaced by other smaller groups of bigotry. Our neighbors are members of Lordship Church, Pacific Coast Knights of the KKK, Truth in Love Project, The Brother Nathanael Foundation, America's Promise Ministries, Our Place Fellowship, Campaign for Radical Truth in History, all listed as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
These groups are part of the larger Christian Identity Movement, America's Promise Ministries, Anti-Muslim, Ku Klux Klan, Holocaust Denial, and General Hate groups. A real hot-bed of hate!
