Survey: Do you know of any atheists who oppose gay marriage? If so, I would like to know why. Gay marriage has always been a religious issue because the gods don’t like gays to marry. Why would an atheist support making gay marriage illegal?
OVER 300 RESPONSES! FABULOUS, THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!
Wheeeee! seems like we're still going on this one. I think the members of A/N have been hoodwinked by this half-wit. Ok, we're trusting and love to discuss things. But.....FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST....this has to end.
Who's been hoodwinked? Long threads like this give people an opportunity to begin flexing their critical thinking skills, even if the person "debating" them is not being rational. I see a lot of good commentary/resource links here that would be useful in a summary of how to combat homophobia.
Atheism is only the belief that it is very likely that there isn't a god or gods and you go on from there. Atheism doesn't mean that everyone who is an atheist will all have the same life beliefs. Our lives are all different and each nontheistic person will have different experiences in life and have different philosophies. I personally do not know anyone that hates gays and is an atheist. The 'hate' for homosexuals comes almost entirely from people who fail to understand evolution and science, and base their understanding of the world through their narrowminded religions and gods.
I have heard of an Atheist being grossed out by gay people but other than that I could not think of a reason why an Atheist would be against gay marriage. I myself fully support it and think its completely absurd for no one to see the religious significance of its illegality...they just ignore it like it actually makes sense in a non-religious viewpoint. So yea...I think the only reason (only slightly understandable reason) an Atheist would be against gay marriage is because they find it gross.
My beloved sister is gay. I have never been grossed out by her,her lovers, or her gay male friends.
However, when I was first married,we had a fairly blunt (female) friend over for dinner.
After dinner,as we were having coffee, our friend exclaimed: "Fair dinkum, if I hear another fucking 'sweet heart 'or 'darling', I'm gonna fucking throw up!"
I guess it's about balance and context.
I must admit, the kissing scene in "Brokeback Mountain" made me feel rather uncomfortable. I was not able to watch the whole thing. BUT I concede that's me,the movie was probably fine. Unlike say "The Passion Of The Christ" which I consider sadistic pornography.
I neither support or defend anything that doesn't affect me. I got verbally assaulted a few years back because during discussion with several people about the election that I was leaning toward Bush over Kerry. A gay guy in the group yelled at me that I was what was wrong because me voting for people like Bush was going to keep him from being happy. (It was allot more that than but thats the gist of it) Sure it may suck for him when Bush got elected and sure it turned out to suck for most of us but we all vote on issues that affect us. I could give two fucks about gay marriage or abortion. It has not affect on my day to day life. I don't even care if someone wants to marry their dog or their sister. I really, really, really don't care. If two dudes get married tomorrow it wouldn't change my day. If they don't still doesn't change my day. Is it legal is it not, I don't really care. I'm not going to bang a drum and support it because it doesn't affect me. When I decide to take one up the tail pipe or grow a womb I'll worry about abortion or gay marriage.
