The 76% of Republicans who await a Second Coming are blocking action against Climate Destabilization. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, at least to the extent that a 6°C rise from business as usual will usher in the end of civilization.
Research by David C. Barker of the University of Pittsburgh and David H. Bearce of the University of Colorado uncovered that belief in the biblical end-times was a motivating factor behind resistance to curbing climate change.
“[T]he fact that such an overwhelming percentage of Republican citizens profess a belief in the Second Coming (76 percent in 2006, according to our sample) suggests that governmental attempts to curb greenhouse emissions would encounter stiff resistance even if every Democrat in the country wanted to curb them,” Barker and Bearce wrote in their study,...
I'm sure there are religions that do teach the importance of taking care of the earth. But it sounds like the end-timers MAY have enough power to make part of their prophecy self-fulfilling -- though without the secret magical afterlife places or replacement paradise earth.
What's the prevalence of that belief among Republican congresscritters?
I've heard it said that theocrats are either unconsciousy or designedly working to bring about all kinds of evil and wars and persecution and subjugation of all unchristian individuals in order to wipe the world of evil so that the second coming will be triggered, because according to theocrats Christ will return upon the cleansing of the world from evil. I think all the things that the Republican party are doing are by their design to fulfill the prophecies of the end times. I'm not the only one who knows this, there are others. And I think that the Republicans are playing the role of the Biblical Beast (some refer to it as the Antichrist from John's writings) of the book of Revelation while trying to instead play God. So, I think the Antichrist is real, only by human design made to (self)-fulfill Biblical prophecy.
As has been said before, there is a group of people on this planet who will smile with pure delight upon first sight of a mushroom cloud.
It's downright sick.
As I said these theocrats are playing the Antichrist while trying to play God. But because they're intention is to play God they must see someone else or some other group as the Antichrist. The Islamists believe America to be the great Satan (Antichrist), and American theocrats may see Islam and it's leader, who they may think is President Obama, as the Antichrist and all non-Christian peoples as the servants of Satan. And these theocrats believe that eventually there will a great war with Russia (Gog and Magog, Ezekiel chapters 38-39) after the latter joins forces with Iran and parts of Iraq (Persia), the theocrats then believe that China will join the fray, and that America and these foes are decimated, but not destroyed, and that just prior to the second coming of Christ all nations will meet in the plain of Megiddo and their armies will battle it out over Israel and then before Israel is totally destroyed Christ will descend from heaven with the armies of Heaven, the forces trying to destroy Israel will turn their weapons toward heaven and make war with Christ and the armies of Heaven at which point Christ will instantly obliterate the armies of Satan and descend to earth and rule earth for a thousand years.
Then will come the creation of a new universe and a new heaven as the old is melted with fervent heat. These theocrats are usually far right conservative Republicans and they are fundamentalist Christians, meaning they take the scripture literally. This pro-theocracy group includes the majority of evangelical Christians in America.
Theocrats are a danger to all free peoples and maybe their lives also, including especially freethinkers [athiests, pantheists, and deists]. The theocrats in Iran are also a threat to life and freedom. Both theocrats have the ultimate goal of world domination. They are incompatible belief systems and each group believes they will be the one left when all else is said and done. Atheists and other freethinkers need to amplify their efforts to spread reason and sanity throughout the world before these opposing radical fundamentalist groups break out in all out nuclear combat and kill us all in their attempt to be the one true religion in a decimated world. The theocrats know global climate change is real and that they are behind it, but they attribute it to God in fulfillment of meteorological prophecies of a warming earth scorched by the sun. They may have sublimated their knowledge that they're doing this, or they may feel that, as I said, it is their responsibility to fulfill the Bible's prophecies in order for Christ to come.
As long as a majority of Christians -- probably a huge majority -- see this world as only a temporary way-station on the way to the final, permanent world, we can't really expect them to care about preserving it. Life is seen as a test, intended to be miserable and to be overcome on the way to that which is perfect. It goes back to Medieval times, when church and crown united to abuse people, keep them unhappy, so they will accept anything in order to reach perfection after this life. Many -- most? -- Americans no longer fully accept this idea, but they're still tied into it by their belief in heaven.
Unfortunately, their end of civilization is a foregone conclusion. In lockstep with the right wingnut branch of the GOP, they refused to accept man-made climate change, probably because God would not have created the earth only to burn it to a crisp. And yet the condition precedent to the Rupt --uh, Rapture -- already has occurred. I mean, the Jewish people have returned to the Holy Land, and how! Evangelicals like the Rev. John Hagee collect money from fundamentalist (read: ignorant) congregations to fund various Israeli projects, least of all West Bank incursions in the form of the settlements. This can only result in exacerbation of the tensions not only in the Levant but anywhere on earth where there are Muslims sympathetic to the fate of the Palestinians, who lost everything but their identity in 1948. That these two monotheistic faiths should be at each other's throats this late in mankind's history is tragic. We are doing such a good job of destroying our planet I am at a loss to understand why anyone would want to hasten the end with such slavish adherence to dogma.
