Every cell is an Individual, but Mark 2:17 commands me to take FULL advantage of all medical research

A Christian friend of mine (scientist) claims that prayer always works and that embryonic stem cell research must not be permitted because of what the Bible (inerrant word of God) says.  He also believes that everything happens for a reason and no-one must interfere with God's plan.  When he became sick with dengue virus, he and his family immediately went to the best hospital.  When I asked him why sought medical treatment immediately, he threw Mark 2:17 at me and emphasized that Christians must follow Jesus's commands.  So, I threw Mathew 5:17-18, Luke 19:27, John 2:15, Deutoronomy 13:6-9 at him.  His reply was very simple; my friend, we do not have to follow all those commands because Jesus's command on love thy neighbor overrides all other commands (those that are uncomfortable to Christians) in the Bible.

Matthew 5:17-18  "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

No context here….simple and straight command.  How about Luke 19:27?

Luke 19:27.  But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them--bring them here and kill them in front of me.'"

John 2:15 - Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.

Deuteronomy 13L6-9)..6 “If your brother, your mother’s son, or your son or daughter, or the wife [a]you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods’ (whom neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end), 8 you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him. 9 But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

And the 11th Commandment (or is it the 12th?):

Ignore any commandment that is inconvenient to you at the moment (which is what most christians do, that I've seen!).

Loren, your description fits my experiences.

For just about every law in the old and new testament is a law that contradicts it. Just one example,

Luke 6:31, love your enemies. Well, we know what the old testament god did with enemies. Just one verse, and there are many:

Isaiah 34.3, God will kill so many people that the land will be soaked, the rivers flooded, and the mountains melted in blood. The ground will be covered with dead bodies, which will stink to high heaven. The whole earth will be destroyed.

or Revelations 14.16, So he, Jesus, who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

Revelations 14:20, The winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

Sounds like  love your enemies unless ...?

For anyone who has read the entire bible, there are so many examples, it would fill a huge notebook.

In religious apologetics, an explanation can be given for the most egregious of slaughters and people in the pews nod their heads as if they believed the lies, distortions, delusions, exaggeration or trivialization of gross human slaughter, even babies, pregnant women and old people.

Now tell me, why do the preachers and teachers of the doctrine tell such outrageous stories? Is it because they care about you and me? Hardly. They need numbers! Those numbers of people need to bring in numbers more. It is a gargantuan ponzi scheme.

Money, power, attention.......make people do weird things.  If you want to become rich, create a new religion and start collecting donations from desperate people.

Here is a nice video on how religious leaders lie.

Excellent video Raj. Thanks.

A beautiful, interactive visualization of contradictions in the bible (along with the distribution of cruelty and absurdity): http://bibviz.com/

It's been expanded and updated since the last time I looked at it, to include contradictions from the Skeptic's Annotated Bible, infidels.org, and EvilBible.com.

Brilliant!  Thank you!

thanks, Grinning Cat!

I don't understand using bible versus to argue with a Christian.  It only lends credibility to something that has none.  Just my thought.

"I don't understand using bible versus to argue with a Christian.  It only lends credibility to something that has none.  Just my thought."

Usually, non-believers (or for that matter, believers who aren't Christian) use bible verses to illustrate its contradictions, absurdities, factual errors, questionable moral principles and so on.  That is, it's reasonable to ask a believer how, if they believe that the bible is the inerrant word of their god, can they claim the veracity of both verse X and verse Y.  Sometimes this is a helpful technique, but usually it results in bizarre apologetic gymnastics such as, "The Bible was written by divinely inspired but fallible men, and we must interpret from it what God meant." or, "We fallen souls cannot understand and should not question the word of God that does make consistent sense whether we are capable of seeing it or not.  We must take it as a matter of faith to be true."  Then we get to point out how those two statements are contradictory.

To a large extent you are right.  But sometimes, it is very useful to demonstrate contradictions to those who are willing to listen (liberal Christians).  In the last 6 years, 3 of my Christian friends have become atheists after many years of intense but very healthy debates.
