After four and a half decades of quiet but convinced disbelief I've finally decided to seek out other atheists and share. They say there are no atheists in foxholes. Well I've been a soldier and a pilot and can tell you it's bullshit. On more than a few occasions I've been terrified enough to shake and once was sure that I'd be dead in a few minutes. I'm glad I was wrong; but not once did I utter a prayer. Born into a Roman Catholic family and educated from grade 1 through 8 in a faith based school, I simply didn't buy it. My unruly mind would not conform and in fact got me labelled as an "attitude problem". For years I envied others their belief in God. What a comfort it must be. But after a while I got used to it. Made peace with it. Last month I stumbled across a Christopher Hitchens debate on you tube. It was like a flash of light in a cave- I'm not alone.

Then I found this website. It feels like a homecoming.

Hi John, It's so nice to meet you too.  Welcome to the site.  Yes, you are not alone. : )
I'm so glad you found us!  I just recently started reaching out to find other atheists, too.  Until recently, I had never met another atheist.  Then, in a small group I found, someone recommended me to this website.  Now I'm conversing with lots of other atheists, and reading lots of interesting articles that they post links to.  This website is so user friendly that even someone who is not very computer literate like me can get around easily.  You've found the Forum, check out the groups, too.  See you around!
