Pope blames atheists for global warming
August 29, 11:52 AM Portland Humanist Examiner Micha J. Stone

The Pope blames atheists for global warming. Pope Benedict is claiming atheists are responsible for the destruction of the environment. The Pope made the claims in a recent speech given at the Vatican. The claim is a puzzling attack on atheism that frankly makes little sense.

Excerpt from the Pope's speech:

“Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the ‘final authority,’ and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible.”

The irony is that any historical evaluation places the blame for global warming and the degradation of the planet firmly in the lap of Christians and the Catholic church. The Holy Bible, a book atheists firmly reject for good reason, claims that God gave man dominion over the earth. Christians, including Catholics, took these words to heart. They used those words as carte blanche, a justification for all manners of planetary abuse.

Christianity, and Catholicism, are historically anti-environmental. In fact, if blame is to be placed for the current global environmental crisis, it is to be placed squarely upon the Judeo-Christian tradition. The fact that Christianity is anti-environmental is no secret. Indeed, many Christians have taken a perverse pride in claiming their dominion. For example, James Watt, who became U.S. Secretary of the Interior under Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s, wrote an influential and damning article entitled "Ours Is the Earth". Watt, speaking for countless Christians, made it abundantly clear that for believers the earth is "merely a temporary way station on the road to eternal life...The earth was put here by the Lord for His people to subdue and to use for profitable purposes on their way to the hereafter."

For those of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the earth is, for all intents and purposes, disposable, nothing but a waiting room for eternity. As such the waiting room can be plundered in any fashion. After all, the earth is but a temporary and transient thing of no consequence when compared to the promise of eternity (pie in the sky, yum yum!).

The fact that the Pope would bear false witness should surprise no one. Such is the stuff of most religions. The hypocrisy of the Pope is monstrous. He lives in opulent luxury, surrounded by obscene material wealth, while paying lip service to the poor unwashed masses. Children starve for lack of the most minimal of nutrition, while the Pope parades around in designer shoes. Words fail to describe the obscene perversity of this hypocritical buffoon.

The Pope is not alone is his hypocrisy. It is a hallmark of the successful Christian leader to live in luxury while preaching charity. It is one of the great and ugly ironies of religious life. The Pope is just another religious con man, the pointy hat and funny dress symbolic of criminal decadence and moral corruption.

I couldn't agree more. The fact is this is nothing new. Xians take great pride in pointing fingers at who they hate, (for no other reason than they don't believe the BS ). While at the same time Xians are doing what they are acusing the other of doing. I think that when religious leaders make proclaimations like these and attack groups like ours, that we are being a real threat to there controll over populations. Also it proves what an ignorant ass he really is. Again great article.
Another excerpt from the same speech:

Together we can build an integral human development beneficial to present and future peoples, a development inspired by the values of charity in truth. For this to happen it is indispensable that the present model of global development be transformed through a greater and shared responsibility for creation: This is demanded not only by environmental emergencies, but also by the scandal of hunger and poverty.

The scandal of hunger and poverty exacerbated by the Church's oppostion to birth control? The poorest areas of the planet, where population is exploding, are the most likely to find adherents taking the prohibitions seriously. In more secularized nations- nations also enjoying greater prosperity across all economic levels- most Catholics clearly ignore the Pope's intrusion into their bedrooms. It's a vicious cycle.
that's what they do; setup non-believers for failure by hiring uneducated worker/manager/broker types...
hey wait, what...

oh yeah the cahtymormons...
their leader is an old man; he's a waste even more-so due to his holier than thou idiocy

as for environment; I've worked with plenty of companies that I could have blown the whistle on
and they were all either own/run by cathies and jews; usual latin melt-down here in not so sunny south florida

it strikes me that these faith-based leaders have all aligned themselves with organized crime
either data-base related money laundering crime through commodity waste fraud and abuse
to straight up cocaine deals; black-mailing the owners of these corporations
look up c street, they even fund the dictators across the world

what else is new

f minus for the the vatican't and the other organized crime bosses
this is what's left of America folks
Tell you what though
I have no problem being the reason for the destruction of catholisism or CEO's that use it as a loophole to get their way

The Catholic League is trying to flood Showtime and CBS with demands that Penn & Teller be taken off the air…

Last week they outdid themselves with Penn & Teller: Bullshit: The Vatican. It was an attack on an obscenely rich (true) institution that protects pedophiles (true), subjugates women (true), fights against science (true) and actually promotes the spread of AIDS in Africa by refusing to let its clinics distribute condoms and by condemning their use as “sin” (true and true). The show focused on an Italian comedian, a woman whom the church is trying to have imprisoned for mocking the Pope, another “sin.”

What the avowed atheists Penn and Teller did not do was attack Catholicism or the Catholic faithful in general. But they blistered the Pope and the Vatican, and I’d challenge anyone to point to a single untruth or even exaggeration in a show I watched very carefully. (I forgot to tape it, but it’s available, I assume, on Showtime on Demand, and I know snippets of it are available on You Tube.)

And now, the Catholic League is trying to flood Showtime and CBS with demands that Penn & Teller be taken off the air. CL head Bill Donohue (whose mendacious “defense” of the church’s cover-up of pedophilia in Ireland was described in July PIQUE) has taken to calling the two comedians “Nazis.” How tone deaf do you have to be to call “Nazis” the opponents of the Pope, who wore a Nazi uniform, and the Vatican, which legitimized the new Nazi regime with its infamous concordat, and which never did get around to excommunicating baptized-Catholic Adolph Hitler?

Please help fight this censorship. Dennis Middlebrooks has dug up the e-addresses of two CBS executives whose spines we must stiffen. They are Nancy Tellem, in charge of programming at both Showtime and CBS – – and Les Moonves, CBS’s CEO –

A suggested letter:

Dear Ms Tellem:

Please resist the vicious attacks of the right-wingers who would have you cancel Penn & Teller’s excellent – and I believe important – show. CBS has a long and proud history, going back to Edward R. Murrow, of “telling it like it is.” Whatever anyone thinks of Penn & Teller’s attitude, there was not a single untruth in “Penn & Teller: Bullshit: The Vatican.” They have every right to tell the truth as they see it, and CBS and Showtime have every right to air it. Congratulations on doing so. Keep up the good work.

P.S. I tried it and got through to nancy, but not les.
