I admit ignorance of the finer points of Islamic belief and the Koran in particular. As you know, the N.T. contains a gospel that posits, apparently, that civilization has a telos; that is, the Book of Revelations supposedly claims that believers will be taken up to Heaven and evil non-believers will be destroyed. My question is, other than the notion that faithful martyrs will immediately be taken to Paradise and awarded 72 virgins (though Sam Harris points out that this may be a mistranslation for a type of grape or raisin), are there any suras addressing a telos comparable to that of John of Patmos's prediction of an end of days? Thanks for any help.

Now I understand.  Thanks for the clarification.  Now about those hemorrhoids....

Heres a link on Islamic eschatology.  Different branches of Islam have different opinions.

Here is the part about the end times:

Like both Christianity and Judaism, Islam has a point when history is brought to a conclusion -- the final hour or the end times. In Islam, Christianity and Judaism, this end time is a conflict between nations and God’s Messiah. Both Christianity and Islam, see Jesus as the Messiah, while Judaism rejects Jesus as Messiah. Judaism however, looks to the coming of their Messiah at the end of days.

All three faiths see the coming of an antichrist. Although the term used might differ in each, they see an end times world leader who opposes God and his rule. The Muslims call him, Dajjal; in Judaism he is called Armilus;[3] while in Christianity he is known as the Antichrist or the Beast[4]. In all three faiths, the Messiah defeats this end times world leader, who opposes God’s law. God's law for the Muslims is the Quran.

Also, playing a prominent role in end times events for all three faiths, is the appearance of Gog and Magog. These nations are mentioned in the Old Testament (Ezekiel 38 & 39), in the book of Revelation (Chapter 20) and in the Quran (Surah 18:94,97, 21:96). Gog and Magog head a group of nations opposed to God in the end of days.

Another character playing a prominent role in Islam, especially in the Shia sect is the Mahdi. Mahdi comes either before or with the return of Jesus, to set things in order. There is dispute within Islam regarding his nature and function. The Shia sect views this individual as the 12th Imam, hidden until the time when he should appear.

The time of the end

According to the Quran, the end times is hidden by Allah, who will reveal the time when it is at hand.

My own belief is the antichrist of all three faiths is here, in the form of Dick Cheney.

I tried not to give a wikipedia link as the first choice, but here is that as well

Islamic eschatology is the branch of Islamic scholarship that studies Yawm al-Qiyāmah (pronounced yome-ul-key-ah-mah; Arabic: يوم القيامة‎ "the Day of Resurrection") or Yawm ad-Dīn (pronounced yome-ud-dean; يوم الدين "the Day of Judgment"). This is believed to be the final assessment of humanity by Allah, consisting of the annihilation of all life, resurrection and judgment.

from that article -

"At the time of judgment, terrible corruption and chaos will rule"=  oh, that 's now! Boy are we in trouble!  No raisins for me!

"The Mahdi will be sent and with the help of Isa, will battle Masih ad-Dajjal. They will triumph, liberating Islam from cruelty" - fat chance for that!

Here's some more....

Islamic apocalyptic literature describing Armageddon is often known as fitnah, malāhim, or ghaybah in Shī‘a Islam. Righteous are rewarded with pleasures of Jannah, while unrighteous are tortured in Jahannam.

So you can tell your friends that the times of the fitnah, malahim, or ghabah are coming.  That'll get them thinking.  May you be rewarded with the pleasures of Jannah, and never worry about Jahannam.

The wikipedia article has long lists of the major and minor signs of the end times.  Among my favorites - there are several -

Children will be foul - I've seen that at the grocery store - a sign of the end times for sure!

Islam does not consider Jesus divine.

On the 72 raisins issue, this Islamic apologist states they can't possibly be raisins because raisins can't have round breasts, and you cant be married to a raisin.  I won't go into explicit detail about the other pleasures of the erotic Islamic heaven - for hetero men - but let's just say they wont be needing any viagra.

Your link says that men may need to do a ritual to cleanse from an ejaculation after reading descriptions of Heaven in the Koran.

... It sounds like the Islamic rule against masturbating is responsible for a lot of terrorism/suicide bombers.

I dusted of my copy of the Qur'an and found the following:

Surat Al-Hijr (15:43-45) Hell is the promised place for all these, with seven gaes, each gate having it's allotted share of them.

Surat Az-Zumar (39:71)And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, "Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "Yes, but the word of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers.
