U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead Saturday, CBS News has confirmed. A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service said he appeared to die of natural causes.
According to the San Antonio News-Express, which was first to report his death, Scalia was found dead in his room at a West Texas resort.
Scalia, 79, was one of the staunchest conservative members of the court. He was nominated in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan and is the longest-serving member on the court.
He championed the philosophy of "orginalism," meaning he interprets the Constitution according to what he believes the original authors intended over 200 years ago.
The correct spelling is:
o·rig·i·nal·ism - the principle or belief that the original intent of an author should be adhered to in later interpretations of a work.
the judicial interpretation of the constitution that aims to follow closely the original intentions of those who drafted it.
Is it wrong of me to "Like" this post, Joan? I'm glad I have the honor of being the first one.
I have as much grief about Scalia's death as I had when Jerry Falwell died.
Scalia had the same mindset as Falwell, he only wore a distinguished black robe while spewing the same rhetoric.
He's just lucky his purported belief system is bullshit, or he'd be speeding toward hell as I type.
Apparently, Kathy, the devil according to scripture "goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour." Then you hear the preacher say the devil is so subtle that he will convince you that he doesn't exist. Really! Now that is batshit crazy!
If you read the book of Job you find that the devil and god are buddies! But, of course, we need apologists to interpret this nonsense for us.
Yes, Carl, I like the news as well. Maybe we will be one funeral closer to progressive politics.
Joan, I like your post rather than mine. It looks like you did better research. I think you also posted first, so I should have watched the blogs before I reacted. :)
BTW, Carl, you words are very correct here. I feel the same way.
Mike, several of us posted the news about Scalia. I didn't check to see if others posted because I was so anxious to get the news to my family and friends.
I remembered Marfa because we lived in El Paso when the kids were 3 & 4 years old. We drove through or past Marfa on our way to Big Bend, I remember vividly the massive structure where they filmed "Giant." It looked like a mansion way off across the landscape. However, it was the studio-built facade of the Benedict mansion, I understand there is not much left of the structure in the middle of nowhere.
Do any of these movie star names sound familiar to you: Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Mercedes McCambridge, Sheb Wooley, Sal Mineo, Dennis Hopper, Rod Taylor, Earl Holliman, and Paul Fix?
The "Giant" mansion's photograph looks about as it did when we saw it.
I understand this is how it looks in a recent photo:
Oh, of course! All the names are familiar and the "mansion" was built in Marfa for the filming of th movie. James Dean was already dead when the film came out, but it helped to build him into a "giant" himself.
As for Scalia dying, I posted in haste the moment I saw this in the news. I never took time to see who else might have posted about it.
I have just removed my post about Scalia dying in order to save space in Atheist Nexus. :)
I like your snark! That didn't even cross my mind. Your great imagination is working full throttle!
I agree with your assessment of the SCOTUS nominees.
While I may feel for his family, his death is a great thing for American Justice, one less naive idiot at the bench.
The American constitution is comprised of Amendments, so it doesn't really matter what the original deists intended, because interpretations change with time, and amendments are meant to be amended to suit modern times and interpretations. So an amendment stating the constitution in more easily understood and clearer terms is long overdue.
Essentially the average intelligence of the American judicial leadership has taken a sudden boost.
