Interest in Epicureanism has been boosted recently by the publication of Stephen Greenblatt's book, The Swerve, an excellent account of the rediscovery of Lucretius' long poem, On the Nature of Things. It is a fascinating story and well-worth reading for the history alone. The need to offset the ideas of Epicurus may account for orthodox Christianity's opposition to pleasure as a goal of life and its suppression of sexuality.
