Scientific evidence and conceptualization of "god" are simply disjoint. Science can only prove physical things, things inside observable or mathematically derivable nature. By definition, none of these things is relevant attributes of what is meant by "god". At best, science could find contradictions in our present foundational understanding of nature, and the resulting loss of explanatory power would lead some people to throw up their arms with the exclamation, "If science can't figure it out, then the only possible explanation is that god did it!"
Now here's a different question. What would happen to you if you're walking alone in the meadow, and suddenly a bright light appears, with a projection that looks like Jesus (or any other canonical religious figure - pick your favorite)? How would you react? Personally I would be deeply surprised, and would suspect self-delusion or some trick of which I'm the unfortunate victim. But if, for the sake of argument, I had some cause to take the apparition seriously, well then.... I would have a long, long list of questions to ask!
I agree with Loren.
However this is not a dumb question.Methinks some members were dumb.
Is atheists were believe in Science ?
Albeit god's nothingness is proved by Science.
I was a pentecostal christian for 20 years. with the love, adoration, fear and respect for god that comes with all of that, but now my views have changed slightly.
I have this comical scenario in my mind that if the theist God is real, and we somehow discover him through the new instruments and means we will develop in the future decades and centuries, we'll just be walking in on him in the lounge-room, with him just hanging out in a pink dressing gown, flicking channels on TV, looking for something to do. And after an awkward silence (sort of like your parents busting you watching porn on the family computer) we'll have that rage-snap conversation with him that all of us former theists have thought about before......"WHY IS THE WORLD SO FUCKED UP WHILE YOU SIT ON YOUR ASS AND DO NOTHING??!!
Either that or his omniscience will cause him to see it coming and he'll hide the bong and book it out of there...
We would have to believe in God. Which is a bit of a depressing thought, because that would mean we were believing in a genocidal maniac (assuming it was Yahweh that was proved). But such is life, we can't pick and choose the universe we live in.
But I am not too worried that this is going to happen.
Except that it wouldn't be a matter of belief; it would be a matter of KNOWING god existed, just like I know my cat exists.
Now, given that, WORSHIPING god ... as I've said before ... whole 'nother matter!
>>Now, given that, WORSHIPING god ... as I've said before ... whole 'nother matter!
That describes a deist. I know a deist, and he's better at arguing with Fundiies than me. His famous slam-dunk; "If God is all-powerful, then why does he need mere mortals to do his (dirty) work?".
