Cases of whooping cough are increasing in the USA and worldwide.
A lot of this in the USA is because the newer whooping cough vaccine doesn't last as long, so immunity wanes. (The older vaccine was discontinued because of some bad reactions). Most adults don't get the whooping cough booster shot that the CDC recommends.
Whooping cough can be life-threatening for babies - but since babies can't be fully immunized, vaccination for the adults around them is especially important.
But the whooping cough epidemic has also been linked to vaccine refusal. A study found that nonmedical vaccine refusal and whooping cough are geographically associated in California. Those evil baby-killing anti-vaxxers are at it again!
My GP told me that for the first time in her career she has seen several cases of whopping cough in adults. The herd protection is weakening, just as more and more people travel as just a normal part of life.
