Education is indeed a way to help sway people from the cruel nonsense of religion but it has to be the right kind of education.
In Indonesia, for instance, there are many educated people who still hold fast to their religious traditions. They have been educated but not in how to think... critical thinking.
To question the existence of god is as plausible as imagining that 2+2 =5 to people here. It is even worse among the uneducated and poor.
Not only is education needed here and in all parts of the third world, but a secular educational infrastructure need to be built in order to maintain the benefits of the education received.
We can always dream....

Who do you know in Charleston, WV who wants to help me start the first West Virginia chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State? I'm working with Beth Corbin and David Morris at AU and I need card-carrying, dues-paying members of AU to attend a Dec 9 meeting in Charleston. Contact me at for details.

Well thats depressing Robin. I think the population would be made up of different political views then there is now. Atheists would not have a God breathing down their knee on every decision. Stem cell research would be in high gear. Who knows what we may have FIXED by now.

Today I forced myself to sit through about 20 minutes of a couple of videos posted by a group that advertised itself as "Answering The New Atheists." These were intelligent people who were posing as deep thinkers. What I came away with was the sense that these people are trying to pull a con job. Contrary to their advertising, they didn't offer a single answer supporting their theist point of view. Instead, they bemoaned the way atheists treat them disrespectfully, and asked the question, "What would a government of atheists be like?" So, what they're saying is that they're scared of atheism, and they don't know what to do about it. Some of them look with longing at the old days when they could burn us at the stake.
