I'm a bassist out of Nashville, the Buckle of the Buy-bull Belt... I totally have the American Atheist sticker on my neck plate of my 4 string bass, and a big red A on my 5 string bass... I've never been more proud to be part of something in my life :) Thank you for passing out these stickers at the rally :)
Unfortunately, we have a P.I.E. situation: that is to say in my own unique way, a situation that is PREDICTABLE and INEVITABLE EVERYTIME with the current trends in our world. It is just not very difficult and complicated to see that, in due time, human existence APPEARS to have its fate set in the not-too-distant future.
t just appears that we (all collective humanity) will all eventually suffocate ourselves to a slow and progressive death as we continue to exhaust our food resources, kill off the habitats that provide food and sustenance, kill off or allow certain societies to kill each other off because there are no oil reserves in their area, leave all children behind in education due to budget cuts for public education, continued unemployment due to outsourcing to countries that do not have labour laws and human rights in the workplace, continued layoffs by many major corporations, continued insurance cancellations by major corporations so they can pay higher bonuses to those managers who do very little but require its workforce to spend many hours doing more work with less, increasing crime as people and homeless people end up stealing food to stay alive because there are no food banks due to corporations and churches unable to keep up with their pretensions in helping the unfortunate, and the rich continue to get richer as the poor get poorer and being relegated to the status of serfs and locked into ownership by some rich entity in return for food and housing and unable to go anywhere. This might make a damn good movie. I am just making wild assumptions based on what little I know about what is currently occurring around the world.
I am sure many people will have to agree with my assumptions. It is food for thought. I do not consider this assumption to be negative or a bad outlook on life because, no matter what I think or anyone else thinks, we are all irrelevant in nature. When will all of humanity realize that we are all inconsequential to nature? Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, blizzards, droughts, floods, meteors, asteroids, diseases, and various other uncontrollable circumstances randomly always occur for no apparent reason or purpose. When I come across a fire ant mound that is built big and high, I always think that these fire ants are like humans building their own society only to have it randomly torn down by the foot of a child or poisoned with Sevin dust. I can just see and hear the fire ants praying to their god ant for deliverance from this oppression and misery. There are countless examples of random events around the globe that occur to all cultures and people from all these cultures will pray to their various respective gods or goddesses for help. Are we humans no different and inconsequential as the fire ants?
A friend of mine came to visit me in college at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas and, since it was the end of the year, we both decided to make a trip to Austin, Texas. Since we would always have discussions about politics and religion, my friend wanted to visit this lady by the name of Madalyn Murray O'Hair. We went to her office and met her there. I was on my last semester before graduating and my friend was helping me write up my resume for the upcoming summer. He told Madalyn a little bit about me which he thought was amazing and gave her my resume in case she wanted to hire me after I graduated.
About a week before my graduation, Madalyn called me to ask me if I wanted to work as a Media Coordinator at her office and I accepted. I did not know much about her or the organisation and thought this would be a good work experience and learning opportunity. I would have to find a place to live but then she said that, from what she knew about me, I would be welcomed to live at their home and I would be safe from the criminal element in Austin, Texas.
I do not know why people would be over-protective of my well-being but Robin told me that her mom "did her research on me" but I am not sure what she was referring to. Every now and then, Robin would give me some item she no longer wanted such as a book of jokes that I found very funny even as an adult. The book was a gift to Robin by her Seventh Grade Graduation class.
I lived with Madalyn Murray O'Hair and Jon Garth Murray and Robin Elaine Murray O'Hair at 3702 Greystone Drive in Austin, Texas for the summer while being employed as their Media Coordinator at the American Atheist General Headquarters on Cameron Road in Austin, Texas.
While working with the O’Hairs, I have been fortunate to meet great intellectuals and authors from around the world and learn first-hand about the issues that Atheists around the world must contend with. Organisations like American Atheists, the Society of Separationists, The Rationalist, and various others continue in their endless quest and fight to promulgate reason, logic, knowledge, empiricism, and just common sense to the various backward thinking societies that seem to copulate and populate around this globe for no apparent reason like a fungus on a rock whirling around in space.
To clarify the fungus notion, I thought it seemed reasonable and logical to conclude that, since all life on earth appears to have been evolved over geologic time from the water accumulated from the billions of icy comets that have struck the earth and created the seas and oceans, all the variations of life, including humans, can be the equivalent of just a fungus on the earth (the rock) whirling around in space for no apparent reason. But since we collectively belong to various cultures around the globe of earth (the rock) with varieties of beliefs, these beliefs or customs GENERATE meaning and purpose in life for all us working bees. I have learned to have a cynical and humourous outlook to the illogical things that permeate all cultures and I hope the reader will not take me too seriously. As Madalyn would always remind Jon and Robin, “it is always better to laugh at some of the abject stupidity of certain human behaviours and belief systems than cry and hide in fear.”
Hopefully someday humanity can heed REASON and LOGIC and have the ability to focus on feeding itself, controlling its copulatory habits like pigs in heat, educating all its children, create jobs, pursue technologies that would provide habitable clean energies and fuel, dispense with the illogicality of war machines that are costly, and other ways of thinking that would preserve our collective human existence.
Been a member of A.A. for 20 years now . Have lapsed a time or two but have always re-uped and have always enjoyed the good times therin. I have jousted in writing with Madalyn and Jon and have received guidance personally from Madalyn via telephone when she helped me with student prayer issuses at the Riverview High School in Sarasonta, FL. It has been a good journey.
@FlyingAtheist - Ok, I had to log out, then reset the password. Doing this, I immediately received an email with a link allowing me to log in. This time, it didn't require a current password to create a new one.
@Daniel B: Thanks for your reply. I was able to set up my account this morning. Yesterday one of the things I did was to click on the option to have my password reset even though, like you, I didn't have one to begin with. Usually responses such as those are immediately received in my inbox. No such reply from American Atheists, which further led me to think this was not legit. HOWEVER....finally, half a day later, this morning I received the email to reset and establish my password. So all is well. Go ahead and give that a try.
@Flying Atheist - Yes, I received the same email and decided it was legit based on the fact that the link was allowing me to log in to the official atheists.org web site. However, I have a problem with this account set up. The link gets you a 1-time login, where you are supposed to first change your password. The problem is that you don't have a current password, so you can't create a new one, and there's no way to submit a helpdesk question. I'm hoping someone from atheists.org or flashingcursor comments on here.
Just curious....has anybody else here received an e-mail from "email@example.com" with the subject line: "Account details for CarlXXXXXXXX at American Atheists (approved)"
The text of the e-mail states:
"American Atheists is in the process of updating our website to better serve you and the Atheist Community.
