The concept, if not the term, predated programmable computers.
Is AI possible, given that much is not yet known about natural intelligence?

I recently heard that imagined by a Big Bang cosmologist. I think it impossible. Why do you think it possible or impossible?Continue

Who else remembers the circa 1965 hope to have a programmable computer translate one human language to another?
Who else remembers the circa 1970 programmable computer a human with a teletype could “talk” to and the computer could reply in a way that could trick the human into thinking he/she was talking with another human.
I used the BASIC language to program a computer to “learn” three-dimensional tic-tac-toe and play the game with a human. It had 64 memory locations and added 1 to the location if the move led to a win and subtracted 1 if the move led to a loss. The theory was that each time it played the game, it would search for the memory location with the highest number and play the corresponding position on the board. I didn’t play enough games to test the theory.
That was AI then.
Programming itself was language translation done by natural intelligence.
