Oh, I'd never heard about zoo lions spraying visitors. Sounds like a symptom of boredom and or frustration.

Enclosing is much different than caging, & I'm glad to see that changing.

That's one of the things I really like about the Cleveland Metropark Zoo: LOTS of open spaces where the exhibit animals can roam around and be who they are, albeit in an enclosed area.  It's been that way for a while, and I think it's a major plus.

They do need plenty of space, so they aren't looking at bars all the time.

I think you're right, Robert. I've seen the Rotterdam zoo change into a modern zoo, bigger enclosures with more landscape, much better for the animals! They mind the visitors much less now.

We're fans of Keepers of the Wild, an animal rescue park in Valentine Az. Whilst not exclusively a cat themed facility, it is mostly cats. They have pretty impressive enclosures, giving the animals plenty of space. They're big enough enclosures that it's often difficult to get good pictures of the big cats. I can't say exclusively if they spray visitors here or not but I've never seen it. The large areas they are provided is likely a factor in them not being intimidated enough by visitors to spray them. https://www.keepersofthewild.org/

Hahahaha...poor Luna.

Comment by Plinius on July 18, 2019 at 11:52pm

I turned the speakers up so Luna could hear Max purring - she was not amused.

I visited the lion cages in the Rotterdam zoo once, and found out that the lions liked to spray visitors with urine... luckily I was behind some big children.

Max is VERY impressive, what an amazing creature. I have a serious affliction for all things cat but a bit more of a thing for Lynx and Bobcats....

"Lou" there was 60 lbs., & 3 or 4 months old if I recall.
