I don't mind dogs as long as they are well behaved, but they aren't my pet of choice. I'm with you about feeding time & where.

I am also a lifelong cat person, but don't care to have any more dogs....we used to raise malemute/huskies, but enough was enough. It was my husband's idea, so I left it all mostly to him.

Well I'm likely the only one that sees it the way I do, but my view was...I don't screw with his dogs at feeding time, at his place. Maybe it isn't that simple but that's the way I saw it. I weened the birds off the food over a few weeks, the numbers dwindled and then I stopped. The dogs never got one, they certainly tried and the German Shepard nearly did several times but I think it all ended without losing any. I'm retired and have been a cat person my whole life, I never liked dogs. I've met folks with good ones and we got along, but I've just never been interested in them and I guess that attitude didn't help during this whole thing...and as I recall, they weren't fond of the birds so it was bound to end poorly.

Unfortunate bird feeding experience, Robert.

The words about people vs pets are spot on Patricia.

We have domestic cats that are killer mice and bird catchers. I hang my feeding station high and out on a limb of a red fir tree. I will have to rig up a system for a birdbath so they can enjoy their daily bath in peace and quiet.

Sadly, the dog owner encourages his dogs to chase birds. Either he has to go, or more likely, I would move to a safe spot. When In Spokane, I had a beautiful bird feeder and bath in a tree surrounded by a wire fence where neighbor cats could not get them and dogs could not get in my yard.

Its difficult not to hold a grudge against idiots like that. The birds, wild or not, have a right to feel safe from ignorant dog owners, who won't learn anything.

We have a feeder out the front window so we can watch the birds feed anytime, & our cats sit in the window to watch too.....all very peaceful, & I wouldn't want to see that disturbed by someone who doesn't give a damn.

As the saying goes....the more I see of people, the better I like my pets.

That's a fact, I confronted them (sometimes the husband, sometimes the wife) and told them if the dogs ever got one of my (I felt responsible for them even though they were sparrows and doves) birds, I would not be responsible for what I would do to the dog (a BB gun was on hand). Dog owner still frequents the park and I hold the grudge to this very day (and it's been 9yrs). I kinda miss the little fluff balls now that I reacquaint myself with the pics...

That's just ignorant, & some dog owners can be such jerks.

I used to feed birds in the mornings, and whilst I like them I also did it out of respect for a departed fellow Vet that used to feed them as well. Granted it got a little crazy in numbers but I kept it to an area that didn't involve anyone's home. I had to stop when a local dog walker (with 2) refused to keep them leashed (not a dog park) and would actually encourage them to chase the birds at feeding time. I didn't stop overnight mind you but did it slowly but I just couldn't justify feeding them just to provide targets for dogs.

There are no zoos around, however, our forest has lots of deer, some wild cats, a few bears, an occasional moose, a killer or two coyotes, killer raccoons, and now that I have the bird feeder station equipped, different species of birds. I have my camera and binoculars at the ready and a bird book. So far, I identified the usual wild turkeys with their chicks, robins, sparrow, wrens, chickadees, finches, lots of crows, and one that I think is a magpie. I hear an owl almost every morning, and woodpeckers all day long.

There are compassionate, caring, concerned people that come into our lives, i.e.
