Kipps did nothave a quiet voice; when he had something to say, he made sure we all heard him.

When we would take him to the vet, he would wait till we stopped at an intersection, and then holler, "RAPE!  FIRE!"  When we got back home, I'd let him out of his carrier, and he would run into another room hissing and cursing over his shoulder at me.

Kipps used to love to "talk" to anyone who would respond.  One night he came in the kitchen (his favorite place except for dad's recliner) yakking as though something had really annoyed him.  I said, "did you get his license number?"  "Noooooo.  Nawt this time, but it was some idiot kid."  You know you're supposed to stay in the house."  "I doan wannnnnaaaaah!"  And blah-blah.

I once asked him who used to live across the street from us, and ha said, "Howwwwelllll!"  That was amazing because the Howells moved away before Kipps was born.

He got out late one night when he was about 15, and would NOT come back in the house no matter what we did.  I found him in pieces all over the yard the next morning.  I was so devastated (having hysterics) that I called in sick at work.  (And got the usual, "But he was just a cat."  Damn them all.  I still resent that. He was a member of our family.)

Smart!

Comment by Plinius on May 13, 2015 at 12:04am

Two of my cats - MauMau and Luna - showed that they knew what I wanted AND that they made their own choices.

Like this - sleeping in the wardrobe is not allowed in this house, but it is what Luna wants. So she gets into the wardrobe in a quarter of a second when I open the door.

"Luna, get out of there!"

"I can't hear you, I'm sleeping."

"Get out Luna!"

So she gets out very fast and runs rings around me, to show who's boss.

You never know with cats - are they smart because they understand what you want or are they smart because they make their own choices?

Patricia, Purr-Dee's photos reminded me a LOT of Kipps (the cat who listened to Mother); he was a grey & white tuxedo (Bugs Bunny) cat, too. His former owner had the hots for Tommy Steele, so she named him after the character he played in "Half a Sixpence."

Jackson Galaxy is really good watching cats. My cat from hell helps a lot if you don't understand animals.

Comment by sk8eycat on May 12, 2015 at 12:16pm

I watch Jackson Galaxy's short cat care videos on YouTube quite often because he has made extensive studies of cat behavior over the years.

On that I have watched several times is about why some cats (I have known three...none of the mine) will suddenly attack with teeth and claws while they are being petted.  The short answer is "overload."  The right way to pet a relaxed cat is to let the cat show you where she/he wants to be touched...hold your hand still, and let the cat rub it....or not.  And watch the tail motion.  Flicking the tip of the tail means "I've had enough.  Stop."  The more violently the tail moves says, You're pissing me off. Quit NOW!"  Whipping the tail back and forth means, "ATTACK!"

I have one friend who loves animals dearly, and would never intentionally hurt any of them, but she had one very sensitive old cat who sent her to the emergency room several times with deep scratches and bites. (And her TV cable "service" moved the Animal Planet channel to a higher tier, so she can't even watch Galaxy's "My Cat From Hell.") She doesn't have (or want) a computer, either, although she has a Kindle...

We had a talky, busy-body cat years ago; he liked to walk around Mother's ankles when she was working in the kitchen.  All she had to do was say, "Get up in your chair and lie down," and he DID!  Always.  They know.

Animals are mostly not parroting, but they are using their knowledge of their surroundings. But tell to scientists that your cat is having fun with you and they'll look down on you:"Crazy catlady tells another fond story...."

But most of us know that our cats have a whole range of sounds and behaviours for games, for when they tricked us, for when we feel bad, for when they want us to leave them alone, etc.

This is one example of why I think Noam Chomsky is flat WRONG about what all the great apes understand about human behavior and language.  He has insisted for years that chimpanzees and gorillas who learn Sign Language and use it to communicate with humans are just "parroting"....  Seeeyit, even Alex the African grey parrot knew what  he was talking about as far as colors and shapes were concerned.
