Grinner, you are right.  I looked it up after I wrote that post.  I've reached the age where I can't remember words that I know I know.  Frustrating and more than a little frightening. (NObody on either side of my family has ever had Alzheimer's, but  strokes are common on my Dad's side.)

About avocados...the Hass variety is a cross between the Guatemalan type and a Mexican variety.  I'll stick to the old pure Fuerte' by the driveway. I think it's as old as I am. (75...almost)

Felaine, I think taurine is the ingredient that cats need for maintaining their vision.

Comment by sk8eycat on September 3, 2014 at 10:13pm

Hmmmm...I just looked up Avoderm pet foods:

They claim that only the leaves and pits of a Guatemalan variety are toxic, and they don't use either leaves or pits in their products.

Now I have to look up Guatemalan avocados....  I do know that our local raccoons and squirrels eat the Fuerte' avocados from our tree, and aren't harmed by them....  The raccoons eat everything but the skin, and make an awful greasy mess.

Thanks, Spud. I knew about most of those because I read every issue of Lori Golden's Pet Press from cover to cover.

I also knew that the green part of potatotomato, and rhubarb plants can kill humans, too.  (Some of my favorite books are murder mysteries with catering and restaurant backgrounds.  They ALL have fancy recipes that I will never use in them.  Heh!)

Peach and apricot pits contain cyanide, and cancer "clinics" in Mexico still process them, and call the result Laetrile.  Useless. And lethal.

Dogs CAN eat some fruits and veggies, but cats are obligate carnivores...they can have some veg, IF they want them, but during the 1960s some vegetarian hippies tried to convert their cats to all-veg diets, and ended up with blind cats.  I've forgoten the name for the ingredient in meat that they need, but it is absolutely necessary for healthy felines.

Spud, thanks for the information and links. This information is so important, especially when we think we are giving treats, only to discover we harm those beloved creatures with whom we share our lives.

Wasn't trying to preach to the choir.  Just looked these up out of personal interest, and thought I'd post them for anyone that wanted to know.

Foods that may be dangerous to your pet:

• Alcoholic beverages

• Apple seeds

• Apricot pits

• Avocados

• Cherry pits

• Candy (particularly chocolate—which is toxic to dogs, cats, and ferrets—and any candy containing the toxic sweetener Xylitol)

• Coffee (grounds, beans, and chocolate-covered espresso beans)

• Garlic

• Grapes

• Gum (can cause blockages and sugar free gums may contain the toxic sweetener Xylitol)

• Hops (used in home beer brewing)

• Macadamia nuts

• Moldy foods

• Mushroom plants

• Mustard seeds

• Onions and onion powder

• Peach pits

• Potato leaves and stems (green parts)

• Raisins

• Rhubarb leaves

• Salt

• Tea (because it contains caffeine)

• Tomato leaves and stems (green parts)

• Walnuts

• Xylitol (artificial sweetener that is toxic to pets)

• Yeast dough

Patricia....Please never give grapes to a dog again.  Or raisins.  They are both highly toxic, can cause kidney failure within a few hours.

There are so many things that are good for people, but dangerous for pets.  I remember about 30 years ago there was a dog food made from avocados on the market, Avo-Derm, that was supposed to be good for skin and fur.  Now the word is that avocados are toxic for dogs, too.

I stopped feeding my cats anything fishy about 20+ years ago because it's not healthy for them....especially red-meat fish (albacore/tuna scraps and salmon.)  Those cause kidney failure, too.

Kiri is really beautiful! It's a pity the tortoise shells I have met never had time for me.

Patricia, Kiri is a beautiful cat. Does that color and pattern have a name?
