The only cannibalism in "Stranger" was at the very end when they made broth out of the finger that Michael cut off his hand just before he went outside to be killed.  RAH called that his "sex and religion satire."  Or something like that.

He and his wife were major cat fans.  I once wrote him a fan letter, mainly about cats and skating (Ginny had been a competitive skater until she joined the Navy in WW2, and RAH learned to skate well enough to join the Broadmoor club's dance sessions when they lived in Colorado Springs), and to my astonishment, he answered it himself.  I still have that letter, and I've also scanned it onto my hard drive.  I was in touch with them off and on until Ginny died...she sent me Polaroids of the original Pixel (The Cat Who Walks Trough Walls).  They've faded pretty badly, but he was a gorgeous orange long-hair with a great plume of a tail.

Some of my other favorite writers are cat fans, or all-animal fans.  I'm re-reading some of Rita Mae Brown's mysteries...the cats, dogs, horses and wild animals talk to each other, mostly about how stupid or silly humans are.

sk8ey, when I first found out that they actually BELIEVE that the wine and wafer BECOME the blood and body of Jesus, it kind of freaked me, and the first thought that I had was that if you believe that, you really ARE committing cannibalism. In junior high, I had a Christian friend that reacted strongly negatively to Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, which is a parody of the life of Jesus, and I'm sure the cannibalism in it got to her, but I guess there is a real cognitive disconnect in Christians who actually believe that. Because if there had been enough meat to go around for all these years, wouldn't they actually be eating the real Jesus? (You can tell I wasn't raised in that tradition!)

When I think about some animal welfare groups, like PETA, I kinda grind my teeth. They are not quite as bad as they used to be, but their methods still remind me of the anti-abortionists who carry placards showing pickled fetuses and things like that.

I think it was George Bernard Shaw who once said that "the worst thing you can say about someone is that they 'mean well.' "

I'm not so good, myself.  I'm often tempted to picket the Los Angeles Archdiocese with a placard of a bloody crucified Jesus superimposed over a comunion wafer, and captioned, "Are you really going to EAT that?"

[ducks and runs out of the room]

Sk8ey, thanks for the most inspirational message I've seen in a long time. Especially the part about quiet and non-confrontational way, and class and humor. When I get frustrated and upset about some of the jerks on other parts of AN, I feel like I can always come back here and find pleasant good cheer, both from the cats AND the people! :-)

@ Prog Rock Girl: Betty White said in an interview years ago that she loves anything "with a leg on each corner."

I have no idea what her religious beliefs are, or if she has any at all, but she has done SO much for animal welfare in her own quiet non-confrontational way.  Amazing woman, and she looks FABulous!

I have no ambition to live another 18 years, but if I do, I hope I do it with at least some of her class and humor.
