Idaho Spud I would suggest to you to get a cat.

I am bias to cats and I love them.

I think they are easier to care for than dogs. Cats don't need to be walked and they are just fine doing their own thing.

I don't think females are harder to deal with than males - I think that person was wrong and sexist in saying that.

Anyways, cats will give you much love and are worth the trouble of having to throw away poop.

Well, the cat will get used to not going into the rooms that you don't want it to go in.

Cats are very clean and they wash themselves with their paws.

Cats are worth the money - I hope you get a cat Idaho Spud.

When you get your cat some here and I can help you out with your new pet.

And ... you can always email me if you have a specific concern that you would like help with.

Well, good luck on your new pet!

They have lots of love to give you!

Yesterday morning, I was late getting out for my exercise on my recumbent trike, so when I passed the animal shelter, it was open, and I decided to stop and look at cats.  See what you peeps have done to me?

There were so many cats & kittens!  I hope they all find homes!

There was one beautiful laid-back grey male, called "Bear" that I was tempted to take home.  He was a year or two old.

I'm sure I would love the company of a cat, and think it would reduce my depression and anxiety.  However, I still see a few negatives to cat ownership because of my personality, but if it did indeed reduce my depression and anxiety as much as I’ve read it does, the negatives would be worth it.

I would like some comments from you all to help me make-up my mind.  I will read and consider all comments, and hope you won't ban me from the group if I decide not to get a cat (smile).

I've never had a pet except the family cat in my avatar and a family dog that died in an accident shortly after we got him.  So, I’ve been without a pet for about 60 years.  I see a lot more negatives about having a dog, so I think a cat is the only pet to consider.  Some of my concerns are:

1. I’m a worry-wart like my mother.  I worry about a lot of things, and so I’m concerned that I would worry a lot about my cat’s welfare, and whether he was happy, which would add to my anxiety.  I’ve gotten used to being alone and having everything my way, so I don’t want to put-up with another person in my house again, but I think a calm cat may not be as anxiety producing as another person.

2. I think I would prefer to have an indoor cat, but when I’m indoors, I spend most of my time in my combination entertainment center/bedroom in the basement, which is a small room.  I keep the door closed all the time, due to spiders getting into the bedroom if I leave it open.  Also, I keep it locked in case of someone breaking in upstairs and coming down. I imagine the cat would want to come & go upstairs & down as he pleases, so how would that work-out?  I suppose he could scratch on the door when he wants in.  It’s metal, so wouldn’t be damaged, but it might get to be more of an interruption than I want.  I suppose a cat-door would work.

3. I don’t like the idea of needing to scoop-out cat poop from the litter-box every day, although it probably doesn’t take much time and I would probably get used to it.

4. I’m on a small fixed income, so it seems like his food, litter, vet bills, & misc would take not a small bite out of my income.

5. I’m slightly germaphobic, so am a little concerned about catching something from him.  I’ve read “Cats Are Good For Us”, and that reduces my concern quite a bit.

6. One of the personnel at the center said kittens are more trouble than older cats, so I think I don’t want a kitten, despite their cuteness.

7. She also said females are more trouble, just like all animals, including humans. lol

8. A young guy that worked there said a cat’s personality doesn’t change when they are spayed or neutered, except perhaps becoming more easy-going.

I like the cat reaching for the sky, so I saved it also.  Actually, I save a lot of these pix, but this one is great!
