Heh! Now switch your ears to an Australian accent (G'die).

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/26/gay-dog-refused-entry-to_n...

An Australian restaurant has been forced to apologize and pay compensation after refusing to let a blind man enter because they thought his dog was gay.

In May 2009, Ian Jolly, 57, was attempting to dine at the Thai Spice restaurant in Adelaide, when he was refused entry after staff misheard his female companion, and thought his "guide dog" was a "gay dog."

"The staff genuinely believed that Nudge was an ordinary pet dog which had been desexed to become a gay dog," the owners said in a statement to South Australia's Equal Opportuni...

Jolly is now set to receive a written apology and $1,400 compensation.

However, Jolly said that the situation had made him embarrassed about going to restaurants.

"I just want to be like everybody else and be able to go out for dinner, to be left alone and just enjoy a meal," he told Australian press.

None of the news articles I read bothered to explain that an Australian's pronunciation of "guide" might sound a little bit like "gay."

Although I don't see why it should matter...and I feel very sorry for Mr. Jolly's humiliation.  What I don't understand is why the restaurant employee didn't recognize the special harness that guide dogs wear.  I mean, that is beyond ignorant.

As for my weekend...pleh.  The neighbors are having a pool party, with children bellowing and shrieking for the past 6 hours.  Did we make that kind of noise when we went swimming as kids?

I took a couple more pics of Sweet Jerry.  I'll post them in my Profile later.  When my ears stop ringing.

Oh I get it Sk8eycat -- it's the pronunciation of "a far".  Cool joke!  Hope you are having a nice weekend.   : )

@Pixy Giggles

I don't know if that was an actual Freudian slip, dyslexia, or just because I never really learned how to type.  But it is wonderfully apt...and silly.

Y'all need to spend some time in the Southern US to get this one...

funny pictures - Why were the three wise men covered in soot? They had come from a far.

@sk8eycat I haven't signed in on here in ages, but I just had to say that is the funniest Freudian slip ever! LOL

Seriously, though, all my respect to all the groups out there that work so hard to rescue and protect all our furry friends. :)

Yikes!  I wish this board allowed us to go back and edit/correct something after it's been posted:  "Grit my teeth

@ Steph S  My congratulations and admiration for the people of Austin!  There are several groups here in SoCal who picket stores that sell puppies and kittens from mills.  One pet shop decided to feature only animals from legitimate rescue groups, and another was shut down.  Los Angeles is so large, and the politics are so complicated, that I don't think they will ever pass a law prohibiting the sale of mass-bred pets...at least not in my lifetime.

The group I admire the most is D Cups Saving Tea Cups...

http://www.dcupssavingteacups.com/DCupsSavingTeaCups/The_Real_Women...

they started up when all the air-head "celebrities" began buying those tiny dogs they could carry around in their purses.

I grit my teet when I see Sphinx cats and "Munchkins"...those short-legged kitties.  I feel so sorry for them; they have major health and care problems, and I think the people who breed them for commercial purposes ought to be taken out and shot.  Or confined to cages and forced to have baby after baby till their uteri fall out.

But I have a nasty mind.

Seriously....the only way to shut down kitten and puppy mills is to dry up the demand.  And that's the most difficult thing of all.

After two years of weekly protests, the Petland store in Austin closed its doors in July 2010. In December 2010, the Austin City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of puppies and kittens in stores.
There is a group in Austin called Protest Petland -- they were successful in getting the store closed.  They are now protesting the Georgetown, TX Petland store.
