My wife came up with a sensible explanation: The cats are reacting to it as though it were a snake that had suddenly crept up on them. Possibly dangerous, certainly treacherous and something you should be wary of. Cats don't see colors very well, after all. Perfectly reasonable.

A new study shows that cats have at least seven functional bitter receptors (in addition to being insensitive to sweetness) -- these notoriously picky eaters perceive food very differently from the way we do!
