Chris, the problem with the Amish (some, anyway) is that they don't CARE. Puppy/kitten mills are an obscene business, and they are legal in the USA...licensed by the Department of Agriculture, but very rarely inspected.

They buy dogs (mostly females) that are AKC registered, and then breed them to AKC registered males as often as possible till they die. All you have to do to register a litter of puppies is fill out the forms and mail them to the AKC. Nobody checks to see if the puppies OR the dam and sire are healthy, or are kept in clean kennels with plenty of space...and fed well.

Chris, I know you don't live in the US, and I don't know if this ghastly pet-breeding business goes on in Europe, but if anyone who is reading this sees "AKC Registered" puppies (especially the latest fad breed) for sale in a "pet store," please do NOT buy anything in that establishment. Not even a bag of kibble.  The puppies are registered, but they are likely to have genetic defects, and won't live very long.

Here in Southern California we have shut down several pet stores that got their "merchandise" from puppy mills, and we have also convinced other stores to either stop selling live animals altogether, or allow non-profit rescue organizations bring dogs, cats, bunnies, etc. in one or two days a week for people to adopt.

Okay.  Sermon over.  For now.

The more you love them, the more pain when they're ill and die. Some people even say that they won't take a cat again, because it hurts so much. I took other cats up till now. And all the nine cats I had to take to the vet for their last painkiller seem to stay with me - that is... I see their faces in things that remind me of them, I can still hear their jokes and laugh about their pranks.

The Amish could say what I said when I heard that animals are not allowed in heaven: "If they don't go to heaven, I don't go either."

Don't feel guilty, Sk8eycat! It's a very hard decision, and you must do it. But don't postpone too much, you know how cats hide their pain. I'm thinking of you.

Loren, where is "Heaven"?  I thought it was here, now, and with my cats.

When a friend of mine was a child, she walked out of a Sunday school class, and refused to ever go back when the teacher told them that animals have no souls, so their pets couldn't go to heaven when they died.  Ya think that's why the Amish feel no guilt about their ghastly puppy and kitten mills?

I have one sick cat right now, and I'm feeling guilty because it's so difficult to tell when it's "time."  He still wants to eat, but he's having a hard time chewing and swallowing; I started feeding him Gerber's (meat only) yesterday, and he seems to like it.  So far. And he still has enough energy to trot through the house when he sees me with a dish of food in my hand.

But I am an emotional mess.

The kitten with two faces died.

"... cats and other animals with this condition typically die young. Duecy’s brain function was likely compromised in some way, says Lyons."
