Mindy, I have to say that not ALL dogs are like that; SuperDog was old and had the worst case of hip dysplasia I've ever seen, and the toddler was about the same height he was.  Eye to eye...he didn't charge the fence, or anything, but I'd never seen him raise his hackles at anything before.  Except other dogs.  He was extremely territorial.

However, he was absolutely sweet to me from the first time I met him, and once when I was staying with them (there were three big dogs in the purebred German shepherd and two shepherd mixes), I was having a terribly painful root canal; the kind where it took at least 3 treatments to get the crud out, and seal it up.  I had come back from the dentist, and the anesthesia was wearing off; I was lying on the bed with my face in the pillow, crying.  Supe trundled in, "kissed" my ear, and trundled out as fast as he could.  If he didn't have fur on his face, I think he would have been blushing.

He was NOT a "kissy" dog.  He was very "talky," though.

I had no idea some dogs didn't recognize toddlers as humans. Thanks for all the stories.

Cats can be very courageous. Years ago, in another apartment one of my cats called me to the garden and when I opened the back door there were two big dogs digging in my garden. Plinius (yes, I use his name) made sure I kept watching and he chased the dogs away.

What an amazing cat.

I noticed something when I was pet-sitting almost full time many years ago: many dogs, especially larger ones, do NOT recognize toddlers as humans, particularly if the dog(s) does not live in a household with small children.  I have seen perfectly sweet, friendly fellows raise their hackles and growl when they see very small children...even through a chain link fence.

In this particular case, legally, the dog should not have been running loose...I didn't hear anyone say whether it was a neighbor's dog or a stray...and the child really should not have been playing so near the street without close supervision.

There's an old, old video that's been circulating the net since dial-up...of a cat chasing a bear out of her yard.  They can be fearless when necessary.

Love the cat sitting on his haunches looking at the monitor, and the kitten laying on the keyboard is cute.
