Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

Love,

--Joe

Truth In Advertising: ‘Atheists Make Better Lovers’

If Catholics, or any single organization, were taken out of the equation, we'd still be left with the same ratio of the populace holding superstitious beliefs. Although the message given out may be mellower it would still be the same message, from the same moral high ground, inspired by the same delusions.

In fact it's fortuitous that these religions have different interpretations of the same illusory worldview. I dread to think how it would pan out if so many head-bangers spoke with one voice.

Although individual sects may have a nuisance rating the problem as I see it is with their common superstition, without which they wouldn't pose any threat to liberal society.

We aren't talking about the nature of the danger, Gerald.  We're talking about the finer details and what makes one dangerous beast more likely to savage us when we aren't paying enough attention to it.

BB:

If someone wants to wallow in bullshit and sits in their corner without trying to inflict their beliefs on others, I have no argument with them.

Yeah, but they never actually do that, do they?  You can't reasonably expect them to.  After all, if you knew the Truth, wouldn't you want to make sure that others knew about it, if it was important to their lives?

Besides, even if you did get some brand of religious insanity that drew in upon itself like that, you would inevitably get other people who would wander over to see what that guy is doing by himself over in the corner.  Some of them might become interested in what he's up to.

For that matter, we have a few nukes over on the mantelpiece.  Every time that guy edges a little closer to them, it makes me a bit nervous.  Religions that don't affect anyone outside of their group don't affect anyone outside of their group, until they suddenly do.

But Gerald, some believers in superstition act more heinously than others. That makes a difference in my book. If someone wants to wallow in bullshit and sits in their corner without trying to inflict their beliefs on others, I have no argument with them.

I think you're failing to see the wood for the trees. Superstition is the problem not the individual varieties that it comes in. Catholics, Protestants, Islamists, Judaists, they've all got a common mentality, none are more or less different from the other. It's like saying Walt Disney is less realistic than Hans Christian Anderson because more people believe the latter than the former. The battle is against superstition per se not any particularly flavour.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on December 16, 2015 at 9:01am

I think you're right about the Catholics being the greatest danger because they're far more subtle. I suspect much of the Catholic hierarchy are what David Silverman calls "bad atheists," people who are smart enough not to believe the bullshit but who push it anyway for their own advantage.

Earlier the fundamentalists tended to despise them - "Sure they burned thousands if not millions just for having differing opinions, but they aren't real Christians." But now, as religionists tend to do, they've allowed their common interests to override their doctrinal differences.

Comment by Joseph P on December 16, 2015 at 8:45am

Yeah, medical science combined with Bronze Age superstition.  What could possibly go wrong?

I think the Catholic church is probably one of the greatest threats in this country, despite the greater mass of fundie evangelicals.  The evangelical nut-jobs lack the subtlety of the Catholic church and think they can just ram their religion straight into our government.  Their leaders have preached for so long about this being a Christian nation that a lot of them can't understand how the government can keep ruling against them in the courts.  The day that the fundamentalists start buying up private, public-service entities, like the Catholics and Mormons, we'll be in trouble.

What's worse is how oblivious most American Catholics are.  I had this friend at work who is a Catholic, but he supports unrestricted, science-based medicine.  I couldn't get through to him that despite him being pro-choice, pro-birth-control, pro-euthanasia, pro-gay-rights, etc, the Catholic church was doing all of this stuff on his behalf.

As near as I could tell, he basically rejects the authority of the Catholic hierarchy, which ... doesn't work, if you identify as a Catholic.  Part of being Catholic is accepting the authority of the church, even over that of the Bible, technically.

This guy didn't have the most consistent thought processes, though.  He kept pulling apologetics from a website that was run by young-Earth creationists.  He couldn't see the problem with pulling arguments from people who have a basic foundation that differs from his own.

“Dude, that's an argument against biological evolution.  You accept that the Earth is billions of years old, and even the Catholic church accepts that biological evolution is a thing.  They have some weird, bastardized version of it, with no evidence to back up the garbage they added (surprise), but they accept the basic premise.  What are you doing?”

Comment by Joan Denoo on December 16, 2015 at 2:39am

Daniel, what is happening to our medical system? Bad news, indeed. When the church, any church has a say in my access to my health care, I can only resist.
