Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., now says
he's embarrassed by his former stance on women in the ministry. Apparently he did some really intense Scripture study, probably about the time he was up for the presidential position at the seminary, and decided he was wrong about women in the ministry. I guess he never got as far as Romans 16:1, or maybe he was only reading the written-by-God-KJV, which refers to Phoebe as a "servant" when the more accurate translation of "diakonon" would be "minister" or "ministrant" or even "deaconess."
Even though the word "diakonos" and it's conjugates are rendered as "minister" or "deacon" in all but one other place, in Romans the translators bent the text to their misogynistic purposes and demoted Phoebe to "servant."
Nice going, guys. Way to stay classy.
