This is not what a religious person did (I don't know if the aggressor is religious or not)  but it is related with religion. Religion is a reason or a pretext for violence.

A 21-year-old man asked his cab driver yesterday if he was a Muslim before stabbing him in the face and arm in broad daylight, reports the New York Times.

The cabbie, Ahmed H. Sharif, 43, gave his account of the incident in a statement released through the New York Taxi Workers Alliance. As the statement explains, the man

started out friendly, asking Mr. Sharif about where he was from, how long he
had been in America, if he was Muslim and if he was observing fast
during Ramadan.
He then first became silent for a few minutes and then suddenly started
cursing and screaming. There, at about 6:15pm at Third Avenue between
40th and 41st Streets, he yelled, "Assalamu Alaikum. Consider this a
checkpoint," and then slashed Mr. Sharif across the neck. As Mr. Sharif
went to knock the knife out, the perpetrator, continuing to scream
loudly, cut the taxi driver in the face (from nose to upper lip), arm and hand.

The suspect,  Michael Enright of Brewster, N.Y., has been charged with attempted murder as a hate crime.

NY cab driver stabbed in alleged anti-Muslim hate crime

One commentary was funny but, of course, "if they act in that way, we will act the same way" is not a reasonable argument:

AL JAZEERA reports that, in the wake of the B-52 which was flown into Mecca 9 years ago today, the local Islamic zoning board has issued a
building permit for the construction of what is said will be the largest
Catholic cathedral built in the last 300 years. Towering at over 20
stories, the bell carrillion is planned to ring deafening versions of
Top-20 hits, such as 'Rock the Kasbah' five times a day.

Local muzzein have voiced their concerns as to the propriety of the 'Infidel Kaffir' being allowed to build such a large structure on what
they deem to be a Holy cultural site, and that the tolling of the bells
will drown out the daily calls to prayer.

Man-on-the street interviews of locals have condemned the proposed Cathedral as 'Crusader-Imperialist.' Also raising local protests are
rumors that the entire project will be largely funded by a joint venture
between the Vatican and Hormel Products, a multinational corporation,
specializing in ham products.

Alvin Spork, the spokesman for the project, dismissed the concerns as bigoted and racist, asserting that the planned Cathedral, which is to be
staffed with Jewish homosexuals, is a symbol of interfaith cooperation
and bridge-building. He noted that the Meccan Constitution guarantees
the free exercise of all religions, even fake ones which hide
totalitarian ideologies, and therefore, the projects' planners were
within their rights to build what they wanted, where they wanted.

Committing violence only reinforces the idea that is fed to young impressionable Muslims: that they are persecuted by non-Muslims, which makes them more likely to hate non-Muslims and get interested in radical Islam.

Also, many of the people who have been beaten up have actually been Sikhs, but were mistaken for Muslims b/c they wear turbans.
That news flash is great. If only it was true. That would be so freaking awesome.
