Tens of thousands of LGBTQ youth currently between the ages of 13 and 17 will undergo gay "conversion therapy" from a licensed health care professional, religious adviser or spiritual leader before they turn 18, according to a new report from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law.
The study's estimates are based on the Generations survey, a national probability study of lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals, and the U.S. Transgender Survey, the largest survey devoted to understanding the lives and experiences of transgender people.
Conversion therapy is a medically defunct practice that aims to change one’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Currently, talk therapy is the most commonly used therapy technique, the report notes, but some practitioners have also combined this with "aversion treatments," such as induced vomiting or electric shocks, the study explains.

We're not just talking about "a medically defunct practice" here, but one which has been thoroughly debunked and discredited as not only NOT changing a person's sexual orientation, but doing considerable psychological harm to that person. Multiple laws on the state and local level have been passed, making such "conversion therapy" illegal, and several polls show strong majorities opining that such practices be utterly proscribed, yet the practice continues. Worse, these "therapies" are being foisted on MINORS, who don't have the legal power to refuse them.
This represents a travesty of massive proportions which deserves to be addressed, particularly in the courts.
To me it's also an indicator of the skewed priorities such parents have, placing unwavering faith in the authority of a book written by ignorants over the health and happiness of their children. Doubtless they think their gay or Lesbian or bisexual or transgender kids couldn't POSSIBLY be happy, because their god invalidates their identity.
Still, I have to ask: do those same parents ever ask the kids if they're happy being who they are?
"Liking" and appreciating the reporting, not the practice!!!
Conversion "therapy" torture is one of the results of that particular religious poison that says "your actual life, your actual happiness don't matter, so long as you're ready for the Secret Magical Place after you die!" No different from "Kissing Hank's Ass" (Hank can do anything, and he'll give you a million dollars, only he can't unless you kiss his ass, and if you don't he'll kick the shit out of you)... author Jim Huber rhetorically asked in his "Questions for Bible-Thumpers" why Christians assume that that parable is about them.
In NJ, which the article doesn’t mention (I live nearby in NYC), it was indeed Christian groups, like the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality and the American Association of Christian Counselors, that litigated to support gay conversion therapy after the state outlawed it (they lost).
But it was a Jewish group —
JONAH, Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing — that got the most notice for its conversion therapy:
Wow, now THAT's some news I was completely unaware of. Seems as though the Israelites can be just as stupid as the Christers ... and just as dangerous in this venue.
Therapy is not changing one to be what they are not. That is abusive.
