Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

Joseph, don't forget the idiot in the Health dept who doesn't believe women need health care.  (If she dies, it's god swill....)  No matter WHAT the problem is.

Comment by Joseph P on July 5, 2015 at 3:11pm

Hell, many of the members of the House Science Committee are young-earth creationists, and many more than that are global-warming deniers.

Poor Denmark, being brought down to our level.

Comment by The Flying Atheist on July 5, 2015 at 9:53am

Ian, what you describe about the situation in Denmark is commonplace here in the US.  I truly feel sorry for you folks.

Comment by Ian Mason on July 5, 2015 at 1:39am

Oh dear. If it wasn't bad enough that Denmark now has a right-wing government. the new minister for Science, Technology and Research is a faithful Xtian who has 'never thought about' how old the Earth is or if the universe started with a Big Bang. Backwards, down the hill.

Comment by Joseph P on July 4, 2015 at 8:30pm

William Lane Craig (paraphrasing Martin Luther) says it pretty explicitly:

We've already said that it's the Holy Spirit who gives us the ultimate assurance of Christianity's truth. Therefore, the only role left for argument and evidence to play is a subsidiary role. I think Martin Luther correctly distinguished between what he called the magisterial and ministerial uses of reason. The magisterial use of reason occurs when reason stands over and above the gospel like a magistrate and judges it on the basis of argument and evidence. The ministerial use of reason occurs when reason submits to and serves the gospel... Should a conflict arise between the witness of the Holy Spirit to the fundamental truth of the Christian faith and beliefs based on argument and evidence, then it is the former which must take precedence over the latter, not vice versa.

-William Lane Craig, Reasonable Faith, p. 36

After reading such a statement, you can dismiss WLC as someone who doesn't give a damn if what he's arguing for is actually true.  His entire stated objective is revealed to be a lie.  If an argument or some evidence indicates that his religious beliefs are false, then he'll just ignore it.  He's cowardly and dishonest, on a fundamental level.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on July 4, 2015 at 9:19am

@ Joseph - You really put it in a nutshell (so to speak):

>You have to be honest, before this sort of stuff becomes a problem.  They aren't.

In their minds, their holy and superior ends justify any means.

Comment by sk8eycat on July 3, 2015 at 10:45pm

The First Amendment says nothing about "respecting" someone's delusions.  Walking on eggshells, maybe, but not "respect."  That's why my usual reaction to doorbell-ringers is guffaws, and/or, "Do you really believe that shit?  I pity you."

And that's why my sister and I have not discussed religion for more than 50 years....we have to share this house, and I can't handle constant confrontations. She means well, and that's what George Bernard Shaw said is the worst thing you can say about somebody.

Comment by Joseph P on July 3, 2015 at 8:21pm

This opens a genuine Pandora's Box, because ALL beliefs must get respected under the First Amendment.

That's the way it would work, if the Dominionists weren't busy trying to take over the government, yes.  They're busy trying to slip in conditionals about the number of adherents your faith has, before it can actually be considered a religion and qualify for first-amendment protections.  They'll try to slip in bits about religion relative to the beliefs of the founding fathers, as if that would make a damned bit of difference.  They'll make arguments based upon frequency of worship ... or the necessity of worship, for that matter ... before it can be considered a deeply-held religious belief.

You have to be honest, before this sort of stuff becomes a problem.  They aren't.

Comment by sk8eycat on July 3, 2015 at 4:56pm

Our friend, R.A.H. wrote that an ice rink could legally be a non-profit place of worship if the majority of the skaters agreed that was the way they needed to "glorify" their deity.

Janet Lynn always skated as though that was her reason for living.....and even as an atheist I sometimes got that "runner's high" which can be mistaken for a "god is with me" feeling.  Beta endorphins are fantastic things. (Karl Rove gets it from the money he collects from his clients.).

Comment by Loren Miller on July 3, 2015 at 3:21pm

A "sincerely held religious belief" can be ANYTHING, because a belief can be rational or irrational.  This opens a genuine Pandora's Box, because ALL beliefs must get respected under the First Amendment.

Which is actually fine, so long as they recognize that their right to wave their beliefs about Stops At My Nose!!!
