Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

Our friend, R.A.H. wrote that an ice rink could legally be a non-profit place of worship if the majority of the skaters agreed that was the way they needed to "glorify" their deity.

Janet Lynn always skated as though that was her reason for living.....and even as an atheist I sometimes got that "runner's high" which can be mistaken for a "god is with me" feeling.  Beta endorphins are fantastic things. (Karl Rove gets it from the money he collects from his clients.).

A "sincerely held religious belief" can be ANYTHING, because a belief can be rational or irrational.  This opens a genuine Pandora's Box, because ALL beliefs must get respected under the First Amendment.

Which is actually fine, so long as they recognize that their right to wave their beliefs about Stops At My Nose!!!

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on July 3, 2015 at 3:13pm

An excellent point, Carl. I think you're absolutely right about this. The rest of the saga is really only fit for a cartoon show (much like the Repuglican primary).

Comment by The Flying Atheist on July 3, 2015 at 1:30pm

No court could seriously take on the task of defining exactly what is and what isn't a sincerely held religious belief.  Xtians have created a situation that demotes the legitimacy of their beliefs even further. They thought they could strengthen their voices and actions by legislation, but they have only lowered the bar to farcical levels.

In California you can now get medical Marijuana for YOUR PETS!  Srsly.  You still need a valid prescription, but if it keeps an elderly cat, dog, horse more comfortable....why the hell NOT?  (And if they think they "see god" I wonder what she-he-it looks like.  An animal or a human.....or something else altogether.)

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on July 2, 2015 at 4:21pm

Maybe they're trying to say it with flowers (or buds, anyway). In fact the Church of Cannabis is no less absurd than the church of anything else. Argument doesn't work with Christians; maybe a vivid lesson by example will. Various satanist groups are attempting more or less the same ploy with public displays of religious paraphernalia. And if they're having fun doing it, that's a hell of a lot more than one can say for most church members!

Comment by Gerald Payne on July 2, 2015 at 4:12pm

You want to watch that this tit for tat mind-set doesn't deflect you from the basic ambition of inspiring a questionable attitude toward the basic tenets of religious belief. That theism is nothing more than superstition is a difficult argument to make when public opinion is so pro religion.

Holy smokes? Indiana Church of Cannabis holds first service

A rowdy bunch of worshippers donning tie-dye T-shirts printed with images of marijuana leaves congregated Wednesday at the inaugural service of the First Church of Cannabis in Indianapolis, a pot-smoking church created to test the limits of Indiana's new Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which went into effect the same day.
. . . Although some experts say Levin and his followers would have a hard time convincing a judge that their religion is legitimate and not just an excuse to get high, the church was not only recognized by the state shortly after Gov. Mike Pence (R) signed the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) into law April 2, but was also incorporated as a nonprofit by the Internal Revenue Service in late May.

If you'd like some sort of clarification, can you elaborate as to what exactly you're confused about?
