Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

"The general view is that candidates are voted for by the right because they are evangelists, or and white, or and men."

I fixed that for you.  You used the wrong conjunction.

... but I would like to see a candidate literacy test where people should prove they know the positions of the person they are voting for.

And as a bonus, it would make it impossible for anyone to vote for Romney for anything, ever again, since it's impossible to figure out his position on any subject more complicated than preventing rich people from having to pay taxes.

Comment by Robert Brown on May 13, 2015 at 1:34pm

@ Bertold - We already have candidate literacy tests called elections. The candidates all lie, saying they will represent us and make promises that they don't keep. If people had to prove they know a candidates positions, they would know when someone lied or went back on a campaign pledge and could vote them out. Instead of giving the power to the candidates to police themselves with a test they would undoubtedly make, I prefer to keep the power with us, the people. Unfortunately a representative democracy only works with an informed populace and every election shows we have anything but informed voters. The general view is that candidates are voted for by the right because they are evangelists, or white, or men. and voted for on the left because they are compassionate Christians, or black, or women. I would love to have elections where people don't know the race, gender, religion or anything else about a candidate and can only vote for them based on their stated ideals, plans for office and track record.

Comment by Bertold Brautigan on May 13, 2015 at 1:10pm

@ Robert - how about a "candidate literacy test" for candidates? That might eliminate half of the nutjobs posing as representatives of the people.

Comment by Pat on May 13, 2015 at 12:52pm

sk8eycat, I completely agree about the electoral college. It has less use to the body politic than the appendix to the body human. It was originally designed to keep the "mob' (that's us common slobs) from having any influence over the executive branch. It was so poorly thought out that after the election between Adams and Jefferson in 1800 (a freaking disaster that went to the House of Representatives), the states had to pass the 12th Amendment to fix it. We've lived with that anachronism ever since. And, have had more than one President who took office after losing the popular vote.

Comment by Robert Brown on May 13, 2015 at 12:45pm

I know this will stink of the literacy tests that were used to prevent people from voting and it is impossible to do, but I would like to see a candidate literacy test where people should prove they know the positions of the person they are voting for. Make people look at the candidate instead of voting for them just because they say they are Christian or something.

I think the disgust with the neo-puritans iin congress has something to do with it.  They are so blind and inept that they keep shooting their own feet, but the only way to get rid of them is to end gerrymandering.  Fat chance.

Heinlein's ideas for organizing representative "districts" in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress makes more sense than the way we do it now.

I would also support an amendment to get rid of the electoral college, and have federal elections decided by popular vote only.  Times, education, literacy, and communication speeds have changed so drastically from the horse and buggy days of the 18th century....who needs a winner-take-all by state system?

Comment by Loren Miller on May 13, 2015 at 6:23am

As I stated elsewhere, I caught coverage of the news that faith is declining in the US both on the CBS and NBC nightly newscasts yesterday evening.  Couldn't be more pleased about it and hope the trend continues!

E-mail from a friend in D.C.  I hope it's true.  (I was tempted to "clean up" his language, but it would have lost a lot of "flavor.")

And there is good news on the religious front.  The number of Americans listing themselves as Christians has dropped from 78% to 71% from 2007, and thinking people are up from 17% to 23% and we now outnumber all major protty cults and the roaming katlicks.
