Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

Actually, Jehovah's Witnesses tend to vote fairly liberal, for such a theologically-conservative denomination.  They're very much in favor of environmental issues, for example.  They're all for the separation of church and state.

Think about it.  They're a small denomination with a history of being treated like a cult by other Christians.  Those who are ignorant and xenophobic have abused them for a while.

And those who actually bothered to learn about them also treated them like a cult, because of their generally cultish behavior and the fact that they're non-trinitarian.  I'd still classify them as Christians, unlike the Unity church, for example, but they're on the opposite side of a divide that was sorted out over 1,800 years ago, for most Christians.  It makes them a target for discrimination.

I was out on a house call for my son, fortunately I havn't had much dealing with religious people, the only encounter was my oldest brother who I think got infected by his wife, tried to ask me to take my kids to church, fat chance. Also when I had him on the phone and told him that the bible was full of violence, he said I must have misread it. So I've been pretty much sheltered from the righteous .

Warren, have you ever met any serious believer in any religion who CAN think for him/her self?  The first requirement for joining any faith is to leave your brain at the door....and make sure any children you  have never develop their brains.

I'm with Joseph. Philosophically I agree that if participation in the electoral process affirms that there's a real choice, I'd rather sit it out. But . . . I'm going to hold my nose and vote for the least obnoxious choice because on the practical level there's not a shred of doubt that the alternative is far worse.

so the JW's can't think for themselves? pity

Comment by sk8eycat on April 18, 2015 at 12:30pm

But in many states they can do as I do....stay home and still vote.

The Witlesses don't take part in any civic activities because they are waiting for their "king" to show up and tell them what to do.

Comment by Grinning Cat on April 18, 2015 at 11:47am

As for your sister's religious objection to voting... more generally, we should spread the idea widely among religious conservatives that they should stay home and not vote! God is all-powerful; if he wants, say, a Republican president, he'll make it happen. Voting shows a lack of faith. It shows you don't trust God. Don't anger God; stay home!

Comment by sk8eycat on April 18, 2015 at 1:04am

I have no spouse, and my sister is a JW and doesn't vote. I get my very detailed Voter's Guide long before I get my actual ballot.  I can study everything at my leisure, make up my mind, and when I get the

The return envelope is very well protected, and my name is only on the very outside of the 2nd envelope.  NO ID on the ballot itself,  or on the inside "sleeve."  The only cost is a "Forever" postage stamp.  No driving around (burning

gasoline)  looking for the polling place, or a parking place, and no bratty kids whooping it up all over the room.

Comment by Grinning Cat on April 18, 2015 at 12:41am

Electronic voting machines would be OK IF their counts are used only as exit polls. The machine could remind you of races and issues where you still have choices, and it could prevent overvotes -- but when you push the final button, it should print out a paper ballot, which becomes the official, tangible, human-readable, recountable record of your vote. If that ballot is correct, you put it in the ballot box; if it's wrong, you tear it up and do it over. (Filling out a blank ballot manually would be an equally valid vote.)

I have mixed feelings about voting by mail. The secret ballot is valuable: going to a polling place in person protects against abusive spouses, coercive bosses, and vote buying. A solution might be to have generous access to early, in-person "absentee" voting.

On the Electoral College: there's a workaround that could bypass it. So far, ten states and DC have enacted the National Popular Vote law, which once enacted by states with a majority of electoral votes, would require them to give their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote for president. We're 61% of the way there!

Comment by sk8eycat on April 17, 2015 at 10:03pm

I'd rather have Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren; I don't care which one is POTUS and which is VP.  They'd make a good team either way.

Santorum is just revolting.

And I don't hve to go out to vote; I've been voting by mail for the past 20+ years.  My ballot will be in the proper hands long before the riots start.  I think everyone who can should reregister as a Permanent Absentee Voter.  The entire state of Oregon votes by mail, it's less stressful, and the counts are more honest.  I don't trust voting machines that can be hacked, or any tech stuff, in fact I'd feel even more comfortable if everyone went back to the kind of newspaper-sized ballots that we used when I cast my first ballot in 1960.  No chads, no automatic readers...all counted by hand.  There's NO sane reason for the news biz to know the results the second the polls close.  That's their problem.

And we need to get rid of the Electoral College....that is SO undemocratic!  We could have had a man with a brain in the White House in 2001, and no faith-based giveaways.
