Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

A Friend is all we need to know of heaven. Goodbye is all we need to know of hell.

@Joan -- I enjoyed reading your posts and am so sorry for your recent losses. I struggle with coming out as an atheist as I have children at home that live in a community that is very religious and go to school with kids that are raised in bible believing homes. I married as a Christian, my husband is a Christian (although we don't attend church thanks to the pastor having several affiairs -- ha) and I am slowly, but surely, introducing skeptical thinking to my kids. Reading your posts comfort me in a way that is hard to describe -- thank you.

@Joan - So very sorry about your many losses. Mine comes in the form of a generation gap. Parents old enough to be my grandparents, siblings all old enough to be my parents. Have had to face the fact that I will almost certainly outlive all of my immediate family (and have already lost most of them). It can't be easy when you reach the age where you start losing so many of your own age group. ((( Hugs )))

@Susan - Yes you can block games like Farmville/frontierville. But there are a thousand little individual apps associated with them that each need to be blocked individually. I'm guessing the app providers do this intentionally so they can keep getting through. It's ok; I just keep blocking.

@Joan - If you mouse around to the right of someone's post there's a hidden "X" that will appear when you mouse over it. Click on it and if the post came via an app it will give you the option to block the person 'OR' block just the app.

@NoSacredCow, I knew you were a person I wanted to know better; I guess it was your passion, your conviction. And, I do like the more reasoned correspondence better. Thank you for your kind words.

So sorry, you got a double dose! I could not get into Atheist News and thought my first article was erased.

It appears my last comment did not get posted; if that is true, I shall write it again. If you have already read this, sorry!

At my age of life (74) many of my closest and dearest friends die. In August, a friend, an elderly fellow with white flowing hair and a long white beard died of old age. We had tea and biscuits every week with his beloved dog Molly. He was an atheist, a Shakespearean actor, an environmentalist and avid conservationist. He taught me how to farm worms and make better composts. He died knowing that means the end ... no heaven to expect, but the end of pain came as a willing friend.

Another of my closest friends, a young woman, a fine chef who trained under Jacques Pépin, held cooking classes in her home and I attended for the last five years, not because I am a slow learner, but because she taught more than cooking, she taught about life. She also died in August; Her dying was a long and hard one from ovarian cancer that would not stop spreading. I shaved my head when she lost her hair the first time and loved the cut, thus, my short haircut.

Another of my dearest friends is quadriplegic from M.S. and can no longer feed herself. We meet every Wednesday morning for brunch and talk politics, religion, and whatever else comes to mind. She finds great comfort in her faith and prayers. I have no interest in changing her beliefs, and I do want to share, both of us, about whatever topic, even faith and no-faith in religion. As best of friends we can be open, honest, compassionate.

And finally, my longest and dearest friend, in the last stages of lung cancer, turns to the hymns of her childhood for comfort, and the community in her church, even as she does not believe the stories of ancient times. To her, community is the important part of her faith.

I have absolutely no interest in changing other peoples minds about ... whatever ... until and unless they impose their beliefs on me or on the institutions of government or education or family planning. Then, I am able and willing to fight hard and long.

I am at an age in life (74) when many of my friends are dying. In August, two of my dearest and most precious friends died, one an atheist, the other a Roman Catholic. In each case they turned for comfort to the beliefs that they lived. Another very close friend is quadriplegic from M.S., is a devout Christian and finds great comfort in her prayers and her hope of being with loved ones. We have brunch together every Wednesday morning and I now have to feed her. I make absolutely no attempt to speak "reason" to her. She needs all the comfort she can muster. Another of my dearest and closest friends is in the last stages of lung cancer and is failing very fast. She gathers her church friends around her like a warm quilt during winter, and faces the end of life is the end. To her, church is community. The rest is stories told by ancient people who did not understand the movement of the stars or the workings of the world.

The one thing I shared with all these friends is my honest understanding of life and death, not to change their beliefs, but to be an honest and true friend. I withheld nothing of myself from them. I would not make that choice in every case, but my intent is not to change other people, but to stop the abuses of religious people who impose their beliefs on me.

And keep creationism as a science out of our public schools! for that and other issues, I am able and willing to put up an honest fight.

Joan -- you can block individual applications or games but leave the person unblocked now. Of course, in some cases that means you never see them post anything :-)
Comment by Joan Denoo on September 14, 2010 at 9:45am
%Jo, I share your opinion of "farmville/frontierville/like this/like that/copy-and-paste-this-or-else ..." A dear and precious friend sends such nonsense and I block them, which means I have, in effect, blocked her. I am smart enough to figure out other ways to communicate with her without all that twaddle.

It seems to me that some time ago, one could block that garbage and still have correspondence with the individual. I don't know when it changed, but I don't like it.
