Atheist News Podcast Project

Hey guys.

I probably shouldn't put this off anymore, so I'm just going to jump on it and improvise. I'm pretty sure the show is over. It was a ton of fun doing it, but with work and my son and my wife in school I simply don't have time to do it anymore.

Other folks have offered to take over but I don't really feel comfortable with that. Quit while you're ahead, sez I.

Anyhow, I payed for another year of hosting, so the archive of podcasts will be available for at least that long.

I really enjoyed podcasting, so I might do something again in the future. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks guys and gals! It was AMAZING.

@Mike, so beautifully stated! We live in a strange period of history ... long exposure to evangelical christian dogma, a society that supports it, a political system ruled by it, a school system that supports it even if it does not teach it overtly, a legal system that used the bible as an instrument to insure truth telling, a medical system that fluctuates between belief in the power of prayer and and belief that does not.

Confused? Afraid? Ambivalent? Acquiescent? Yes, all of these and more cloud our critical thinking mind. The movement of nonbelievers grows in confidence and competence revealing a major shift in our nation's core beliefs.

I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this era ... however, there are potholes everywhere.

You stated, "it's just incredibly unfortunate that they and the people around them need to bolster that false hope, that delusion in order to keep that maintained sanity."

Absolutely correct! and we move toward reason and shared values with other non-believers. For that, I am grateful.

My dear British friend, Roger, in his final hours of living and enjoyed hearing the poems of his youth of England. Roger was my friend who was a boy during the London blitz and describes so vividly his experiences. He witnessed body parts, shattered buildings, broken hearts at a tender age. I told him of David, a young man I correspond with on the internet. He is my son's age. David is in the military, a paratrooper, who has served several tours in the Middle East. Roger took David to his heart and planned to write him a letter, but alas, Roger's life ran out as he whispered his message to me. Here is my letter to David with Roger's message:

David, while he was still coherent, Roger sent you part of a message but was too weak to finish it, and he will be unable to complete it. So, here it is:

"David, war is absolutely impossible to justify. When a soldier refuses to pick up a rifle, I honor him. We've got to tell the young Muslim who has decided we are the enemy, we are not the enemy.

"For God's sake, David, patriotism does not require you to pick up the gun. (at this point, Roger started weeping)

"I speak now to all human kind, war is not the message. Use natural force that war generates and transform it to energy fighting hunger, disease infections, pests, earthquakes, volcanoes, and those desperately in need of help.

"We need an international response unit to confront such enemies.

"People have to be shown there is no difference between black, white, yellow, red. We all want and need to live in peace.

"Barriers are right here starring us in the face. The barriers are ignorance, prejudice, and power over others.

"I want to stand outside and scream what we must do and the warriors hear this message (Roger was paralyzed from the waist down caused by a tumor on his spine.) Hearing the message and giving of alms does not complete the task.

"My message to you is to have faith in the Constitution. I can no longer stand and deliver my message. I can only whisper into Joan's ear. Living to this age I have to whisper the words that hopefully will inspire you, David, and people 1,000 years from now.

"The Founding Fathers of the U.S. had blinders. Many supported slavery and the dominance of women. NO! they were not right in doing so.

"What we do to our children from birth to 10 years old has incredible consequences. (Roger had been struggling with me preparing to testify at the trial of a priest charges with pedophilia). A child who is molested must have assistance with the feelings such action arouses. For children who experiment and explore alone or with other boys, must have education to prepare them for the changes taking place inside their bodies. For the sake of all that is decent, do not punish them!

"I spent the last few days in agony from pins and needles. When we laugh at children who tell of pins and needles, pay attention to them. Empathize with them. They tell of events going on inside their bodies and they tell you the truth. The pins and needs cause agonizing pain. Wounded soldiers report of such pain. Listen to them! Comfort them! I cry from the pain. I cry for them.

"For God's sake, listen to me and hear what I tell you!"

@Mike, I thought you had some interesting, informative, life-enriching subject to bring up. No pressure, mind you, just anticipation.

@NoSacredCow There was something strange about the deaths of two close friends last month. We knew they were dying, we knew their life's journey was ending and yet there was a calm and peace about their passing. In both cases, they were relieved from horrid pain, but in another way we understood that the lives they led were rich and full, with many people loving them and caring for them to the end. We had no illusions of going somewhere else or being with dead loved ones. We knew their immortality lives on in the lives of their families, friends, and the community that gained such treasures from them while they were alive.

My elderly friend was Santa Clause at my neighborhood winter solstice party and he told the kids wonderful stories about the preparations he made for winter. Their eyes shone with wonder and excitement. As his health deteriorated over spring and summer, the neighborhood children wrote him letters and drew pictures that I took to him in the nursing home and hospital. These little boys and girls will grow and mature into compassionate adults because of their gentle parents and the sweet neighbors who participated in their development.

My chef friend knew the end was near and wrote this:
"I love to cook, but it's the mystery of sharing food that is my real passion. It is the ceremony of affection and love that is shared around the table ... the celebration of each other ... an intimacy that is cultured between all sexes, all levels of friendship, loveship and familyship. It's the walls coming down, the common ground that we daily have the opportunity to share. I have witnessed the shedding of face and ego, the complete exposure of heart and spirit within community of good food and relaxed conversation; remaining, in my mind, the true essence of the meal's perfume."

@Natalie, I appreciate the tensions that build up in families and neighborhoods when one breaks away from traditions. There is something about remaining calm during such stress that provides courage when you need it and a model for your children, husband and community to observe. I am not talking about denying who you are and what you think, but about knowing yourself with confidence and competence. I like your modeling critical thinking strategy; that should serve you well.

The nice thing about being 74 and no longer accountable to a spouse and children and schools and neighbors is you can let your beliefs, learned knowledge and experience guide you and even give you the courage to speak up and speak out, especially in the face of foolish attitudes, beliefs, customs, traditions and values. (This is my A.B.C.T.V. of life.

I wish you well in your journey through life. We live in a splendid era; we can be honest and open and not be sentenced to beatings and stonings.

@Joan -- I enjoyed reading your posts and am so sorry for your recent losses. I struggle with coming out as an atheist as I have children at home that live in a community that is very religious and go to school with kids that are raised in bible believing homes. I married as a Christian, my husband is a Christian (although we don't attend church thanks to the pastor having several affiairs -- ha) and I am slowly, but surely, introducing skeptical thinking to my kids. Reading your posts comfort me in a way that is hard to describe -- thank you.

@Joan - So very sorry about your many losses. Mine comes in the form of a generation gap. Parents old enough to be my grandparents, siblings all old enough to be my parents. Have had to face the fact that I will almost certainly outlive all of my immediate family (and have already lost most of them). It can't be easy when you reach the age where you start losing so many of your own age group. ((( Hugs )))

@Susan - Yes you can block games like Farmville/frontierville. But there are a thousand little individual apps associated with them that each need to be blocked individually. I'm guessing the app providers do this intentionally so they can keep getting through. It's ok; I just keep blocking.

@Joan - If you mouse around to the right of someone's post there's a hidden "X" that will appear when you mouse over it. Click on it and if the post came via an app it will give you the option to block the person 'OR' block just the app.
