I mean even the most hardened of Western doctors will agree; all other things being equal, the cancer patient with a positive, fighter attitude will generally do better than the one with the negative, defeatist attitude.

When it gets dangerous is when the New Agers start replacing - rather than supplementing - real treatments for "Wish your troubles away."

I have a sister who's very into that. Everything wrong in my life is because I just don't think happy enough. Of course, ask her why her own life is fucked up and you'll get a paranoid diatribe of how-dare-you-turn-this-on-me, but...

Being surrounded by quite a bit of New Age, it's mind-boggling how many ways people can take the very good (and legitimate) advice of "Live well, think positive," and market it as a magical cure-all that can be yours for just a few hundred/thousand dollars...

Dallas: This book has been recommended to me several times:

Add another recommendation. A great book. An interesting look into positive psychology, a glimpse at the megachurch movement, and how we're still not far enough from the poison of John Calvin.

Yeah I tried it too, but Eva Mendes didn't show up with the sackload of cash & blow like she was supposed to. Darned Secret got me again.

Oprah didn't write it, but she might as well have. It was an Aussie named Rhonda Byrne. And of course it has "huckster" written all over it. I mean, if it were *this* easy, we'd've heard about it a long time ago.

Here's the link to the tripe on Amazon...

"The Secret" is basically good ol' wishful thinking mated up to a dangerous misunderstanding of quantum theory. Or, if you want to put it another way, a brilliant way of marketing to poor understanding of science and human gullibility.

Wish I'd thought of it, though it seems I lack the variable morality involved in conning my fellow man.

What's "the secret", Rog?

Just got out of a bad relationship that i thought was good with a slightly theistic girl and someone who thought her moms advise, using such methods as "the secret" were "wise." Ugh! I'm going to blow up.

Any place where they mix their politics with their Jesus is *scary!*

Not paranoid. Especially if you're experiencing the country from Missouri. I lived in St. Louis for a while. Beautiful, very cool architecture, awesome parks, and some downright scary-ass people.
