Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine have successfully introduced a gene into bone marrow producing stem cells of mice that not only completed eradicated metastatic melanoma (advanced skin cancer) but permanently reconfigured their immune systems thereby curing them or life.

The gene-modified stems cells were then transplanted back into hosts and found to eradicate metastatic melanoma for the lifetime of the mice.

We believe this type of translational model opens new doors for patients with melanoma and potentially other cancers by taking advantage of the potent regenerative capacity of hematopoietic stem cells and new advances in gene therapy."

The findings are to be published in the 12-20-10 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The online version is already available.

I wonder if this would have any corellation to the treatment of various viruses?
It is immune system related so I suppose it might.
