Antarctic: Grand Canyon-sized rift 'speeding ice melt'

Beneath the Ferrigno ice stream UK researchers found the Ferrigno rift, like to Africa's Rift Valley located where two plates separate. As deep as the Grand Canyon, it's only visible by radar. It's thought to bring warm water beneath the ice.

Look for the small icon "Ice Sheet Animation" near the bottom right of the article for the video. It's silent but shows impressive detail of ice flow patterns in Antarctica.
