Whether you're a professional, a student, an amateur, an enthusiast, whatever! Lots of atheists love science. Might as well have a group for it!

Feel free to nerd out, link articles, talk about your favorite field of research, whatever!

I've been super busy with school this semester -- no time for Atheist Nexus, sadly!!
If anyone who's around here a lot wants me to toss them moderation privileges to run this group or anything, just send me (Sara) a message! Thanks!

Removed ability to send mass messages to everyone in the group. At 1000+ members, that seems like asking for spam.

Offer still open if anyone active in the group wants moderation privileges, but it appears everything has been going smoothly with all kinds of great discussions without moderation. Fantastic! :)

Loren, this piece by Kraus offers insights needed, particularly on this day, Dec. 25. "We provide our own meaning"! To shed the strings of puppets, taking on the challenges of living in the question, life becomes rich, robust, and fun, means transformation beyond imagining.

I just discovered this piece by Lawrence Krauss, adapted from one of his Big Think videos.  Worth your time, I think:

Happy HumanLight!

Here's an appropriate bit of weird science:

http://www.livescience.com/7799-strange-humans-glow-visible-light.html

Strange! Humans Glow in Visible Light

The human body literally glows, emitting a visible light in extremely small quantities at levels that rise and fall with the day [...] 1,000 times less intense than the levels to which our naked eyes are sensitive. In fact, virtually all living creatures emit very weak light, which is thought to be a byproduct of biochemical reactions involving free radicals.

(This visible light differs from the infrared radiation [...] that comes from body heat.)

The situation Sagan described could have been predicted from the time President Reagan invited the fundamentalists into the Repub Party. No one counted them and they took over the Party.

Here's a brilliant excerpt from a conversation between Charlie Rose and Carl Sagan.  I can't help but note that the words said here are as valid now as when the interview took place:

That reminds me of when I worked at the Spokane Eye Clinic in 1961, my first day on the job I went to the frig to put my lunch in and there in a cup was an eyeball. I threw up.
