This group should be featured. I'm sure there are more officers on the Nexus. I'm not a cop, but I work for the police department on campus. I'm just a measly Campus Safety Officer. I basically do the leg work during special events(sports, presidential visits, etc).

25 years in Corrections in the East Texas Bible Belt. I'm not sure it is safe to come out at work.

I was issuing a citation yesterday and my pen kept not working. I went through 3 pens before I got one that would write. The redneck I was writing to, and his two buddies were snickering, and one said, "God must not want you to write this cite, since your pens don't work." They all laughed, and I did too as I said, "Well, it's a good thing I don't believe in God then." and I finished writing the cite. Then the guy getting the ticket said he didn't believe in God either, and the other two went along with him, but not with the same conviction. We had an interesting, short, conversation about religion and non-believers. The ticket still stands, however. :-)

Hi. I've been in law enforcement for nearly 20 years. I have not met any other LEOs who have openly professed to be atheist. In my part of the country, the Bible Belt Deep South, it might amount to a lynching, or at the least a loss of a job to be openly atheist.

I forgot to mention that I am not averse to doing a Master's if a position or career advancement called for it. I'm more of a desk person. I have worked as a research assistant and doing reporting - the kind of person you can ask to put together reports on current events or on different numbers in the market or whatever.

Hi. I am going to be finishing my college degree soon and I have to choose a major. I have always been interested in the law enforcement field. I am not suited for police work per se, but I'm interested in other fields related to serving and protecting people. Does anyone have any advice or know of good sites or books where I can explore different options available to someone with a BS in criminal justice, or have any advice yourselves? Thanks so much!

Hi there. I'm a criminal justice student who has his eyes on a career in law enforcement. I just thought I would poke my head in and say hi.

I have in fact met none. Its actually quite the opposite in my Dept. There are three in particular, one a former Chaplain, one left to be a minister and one is studying to be one. Fortunately I don't get discriminated against because of my views, which I am more than open about. At worst I get a head shake or a you'll come around when they see my Atheist coffee mug or bumper stickers. My old partner, who left to be a minister, and I actually had a very comical back and forth on a constant basis. We found it hilarious but I guess if anyone overheard it would have come off as very offensive. As for the job itself, I might not be the best one to comment on that. I'm not one who "Always wanted to be a cop". I got into it because it is something I thought I could do well after serving in the Army, as it turns out I was right. It wasn't for any sense of wanting fulfillment for helping others etc. The time goes quick, the pay is not terrible (For the area) and there are no layoffs. On the other side, I have found that you do have to have a certain mindset to stay with it, and because of that there will always be a comaraderie between people who do the jobs that not just anyone can do. I definitely appreciate that aspect of it.

Hey, Robert - I don't have the badge yet, but it looks like I will (deputy sheriff) after I satisfy a teaching commitment this fall. I very much believe that it is my niche as well, having exhausted so many other lines. Perhaps the group will have me as a "reserve" until I'm official? I'm presently in Tulsa, OK by way of New Orleans. My goal is to get back home and join the NOPD, where they could use as much help as they can get. I'm curious as to how many atheists you've run across in law enforcement. I'm sure there aren't many (if any) here in Tulsa.
