Another High Court Challenge Against the National School Chaplaincy Program

Breaking News! After successfully challenging the Commonwealth government in the High Court of Australia over funding for the National School Chaplaincy Scheme, Ron Williams is to take them on again.  In an attempt to circumvent the High Court ruling, the government has passed some extremely questionable legislation which tears at the heart of parliamentary democracy and public accountability.  Williams has consulted with his crack legal team and the decision has been made today (Saturday, 7 July) to mount another challenge.

For more information see here:

Mounting a High Court challenge is extremely expensive and Ron Williams is just an average, suburban Dad.  If all of us who care about a secular, democratic Australia can chip in as much as we can, it will help enormously.  Please consider donating at:

This is your chance to be a part of making Australian Constitutional history!

Australian Atheist Issues

For new members, if you want to get a grasp of some of the issues effecting atheists in Australia, you might like to take a look at the Atheist Nexus (Australia) submission on "Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st Century" made to the Australian Human Rights Commission early last year. It's long, but easy reading, and worth spending some time on. A report, using information compiled from submissions, should be released later this year.

Just wanted to let people know about The next Sam Harris book which comes out in November. It's called The Moral Landscape and it looks like it will reignite the debate more than any book since The God Delusion. We're going to pushing it heavily on our site, so that if we sell enough we get the opportunity to host him here should he come out next year. Anyway see more about it here:

The interview with Hirsi Ali is on ABC Lateline tonight was well worth watching. I would recommend checking the website and viewing the video!

Has the coalition announced its censorship policy? I find all this deeply disturbing. Have read it elsewhere, too. :-(

Indeed - consider what happened in USA - Gore did not get elected because Ralph Nader took votes - the world got George W.

I agree, Felch. I think it would be great if the Sex Parties and Secular Parties merged with the Greens. These splinter parties, while we may like their policies, do nobody any good and just scatter the liberal left's vote. They mean well, but I fear they do more harm than good.

Excellent! Maybe it does mean something. :-)

And--Chrys and Richard -- I am in such a dilemma about voting. No WAY do I support any form of censorship (except of the type necessary in WW2). No WAY do I want 'Phony Tony' as PM. See the transcript of Kerry O'Brien's interview with JG on Crikey! or the ABC website if, like me, you were unable to watch it.

I will certainly NOT be voting Labor while they stand for the filter and against gay marriage. Further, I know that many of us are considering ignoring how to vote cards and not preferencing Labor, either. If Labor thinks they will win on Greens preferences they had better consider that the Greens voters are well educated and know that they can direct their own preferences and there are no guarantees they will be directed to Labor.

Have reposted with links and crediting Felch on Facebook and Twitter. Hope you don't mind Felch.

Just put up a new blog post that some of you may be interested in. It's called: A Case Against School Chaplaincy - Part One: A Fox in the Hen-house.

"To me, the fundamental flaw in the national school chaplaincy program is that the government is specifically hiring evangelical Christians to go into state schools – and then telling them not to evangelise. It’s like hiring a fox to look after the hen-house under strict instructions it’s not to eat the chickens: the directive is neither fair to the chickens nor the fox."
