Another High Court Challenge Against the National School Chaplaincy Program

Breaking News! After successfully challenging the Commonwealth government in the High Court of Australia over funding for the National School Chaplaincy Scheme, Ron Williams is to take them on again.  In an attempt to circumvent the High Court ruling, the government has passed some extremely questionable legislation which tears at the heart of parliamentary democracy and public accountability.  Williams has consulted with his crack legal team and the decision has been made today (Saturday, 7 July) to mount another challenge.

For more information see here:

Mounting a High Court challenge is extremely expensive and Ron Williams is just an average, suburban Dad.  If all of us who care about a secular, democratic Australia can chip in as much as we can, it will help enormously.  Please consider donating at:

This is your chance to be a part of making Australian Constitutional history!

Embiggen Books - Your Australian Atheist/Skeptical Bookshop

Embiggen Books, an Australian bookstore devoted to promoting science, philosophy, rationalism and skepticism is now on Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne. Warren Bonett and Kirsty Bruce of Embiggen are also passionate and active members of the atheist and skeptical communities.

Australian Atheist Issues

For new members, if you want to get a grasp of some of the issues effecting atheists in Australia, you might like to take a look at the Atheist Nexus (Australia) submission on "Freedom of Religion and Belief in the 21st Century" made to the Australian Human Rights Commission early last year. It's long, but easy reading, and worth spending some time on. A report, using information compiled from submissions, should be released later this year.

David Nicholls from the Atheist Foundation of Australia has posted a video question about religious tax exemptions on ABC's Q&A website. Some of our members might like to add their own thoughts in the comments section. Unfortunately, you have to register to comment, but it doesn't take long.

Just a note to express our concern and hope that our Aussie/Kiwi/South Pacific members, Doug Harrington and Gus Crichton, their family and friends are safe following the tsunami in American Samoa. Doug and his wife Eleanor live in Pago Pago and Gus lives in Apia - these are the two areas worst hit by the tsunami. Just wanted to let you know we're thinking of you, Doug and Gus.

Great to know you'll be joining us at the Convention EWQ! I'll post a notice closer to the date and give anyone who's coming to the convention my mobile number so we can all keep in touch.

I paid for my and my partner's convention tickets tonight. I'm not sure if I'll buy tickets to the dinner. I'll have to see how my finances are next month! I'm looking forward to meeting you all!

Emailed the immigration minister about Female Genital Mutilation as a spin off of this AN discussion:

Senator Evans

I would like to draw your attention to this Sydney Morning Herald article:
I am sure you are more than familiar with this case.

I would also like to draw your attention to this Global Post story which you may not have read:,0

These Scandinavian countries have drawn a line in the sand. They are clearly telling the world that cultural traditions are no excuse for terrible personal harm to powerless young people.

As I am sure you understand, FGM is sometimes mis-named Female Circumcision which makes people imagine that it is the removal of a small piece of skin and it does no harm. This is not the case. The labia minora and clitoris are removed completely. The stump of nerves to the removed clitoris form a painful scar. The labia majora is then sewn shut. This is all done without surgical sanitation or anaesthetic. There is risk of infection to these external wounds and also infection to the womb as menstrual blood is unable to properly drain.

This said to be done to improve male sexual pleasure and to ensure that the woman has not had sex before marriage. Two reprehensible reasons to do anything.

Australia is a country of intelligent compassion. Could we please join Scandinavian countries and send a clear message to Kenya that FGM is not acceptable to this nation.

Thank you for your time.

Weekend pass and dinner booked and paid for MsNaughty and I. :)
That's four people. Double that and we've got the talent outnumbered.

Woohoo! I've bought mine - a full weekend pass (didn't bother with Gold, I want to sit with the unwashed hoi polloi) and the Saturday night dinner.

No need to be sorry, Aaron. As I said, we have quite a few Kiwi members and there's no reason why they can't be members of both groups.

HI Aaron - we have quite a few Kiwis in the Aussie, Kiwi and South Pacific Atheists group. I think it's great for the Kiwis to have their own group, but I'd be sorry to lose them from this one.
