The Eternally Curious Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan had a curious mind for his entire life. In his book The Demon Haunted World he lamented the death of curiosity in high school students that he attributed in part to parents' obsession with either having an answer or making a question sound stupid when asked by their children.

Despite his critics, many in the scientific community itself, Sagan brought the human story of science to people, recognizing the responsibility to educate people in a way that spoke first to their humanity and second to their logic. We will do well to emulate this approach in the 21st century as we contend with all manners of illogic and unreason that he warned of in The Demon Haunted World.

His PBS series Cosmos still stands alone as a pinnacle of achievement in science communication. I wrote an essay for the ten-year-anniversary of his death entitled "The Eternally Curious Carl Sagan". You can read it here:

As a member of this group I will attempt to not geek out and show what a complete fanboy I am when it comes to Carl. I feel he would not approve of such behavior! This man was largely responsible for changing my life.

I'm honoured to say that he lends his name to my new book... if I ever get it finished! (That's not a plug so much as a way to get people to remind me that I need to spend more time writing than I do chatting on Internet forums!) Sleep would be good too.... sleeeeep.... zzzzz

i just loved and miss his voice. seen and read little. would love to learn more. i like that he was about the decriminalization of at least one drug that is still currently considered illicit. (is that true?_)

Sagan was a truly inspirational communicator. Back in the late 1970's my school was invited to be part of the audience for the RI Christmas Lectures but I was in hospital, so missed being a part of it. That year the lectures were given by Sagan! Friends of mine said he was a fantastic lecturer! Cosmos is still one of my favourite TV programmes.

Maybe God took Carl Sagan when he was still at his prime because God was afraid of the competition. Too much science, logic, and persuasiveness.
