Why'd nobody ever mentioned 'International Talk Like a Pirate' day yesterday here?

oops, I forgot matey
Well... some of us were busy.

Little Rock atheists were busy receiving Fred Phelps and his Kansas Westboro bunch. They were here to draw attention to themselves by protesting and hanging around a news editors/reporters convention being conducted here in our capital city.

Our Arkansas Atheists (a small group of folks from both Nexus and here: http://schelfam.net/atheism/index.php) decided that Phelps needed some competition.

We dressed like pirates and got a permit to gather right outside the convention center. Fred's folks didn't stand a chance in Hell of being noticed.

Here's a copy of some chat that took place after in celebration of Westboro's defeat.... (Thanks for sending this out Mark)

Oh yes -- Thanks to the FSM for letting us use his cheesy name.

Way to go, matie!

-- Brian Chilson photo

What do you do to make a bunch of soulless nutcases abandon their post
at the Convention Center? Send in the pirates!

Yep, the cuckoo Phelps hate group walked the plank this morning after
a happy bunch dressed like pirates and holding signs saying "God hates
shrimp -- Leviticus" and "God hates cotton-polyester blends" stood
opposite them at the corner of Markham and Scott streets. The group,
made up of Central Arkansas Pastafarians, waved swords and growled
"Arrghh!" in a manner that would have made Abbie Hoffman proud.

With cars honking and waving at the pirates and a TV crew giving them
all the attention, the Phelps group -- with a child in tow, sadly --
picked up their "fag" epithets and went away. Pitiful.

On the jump, a note Stephens Inc. sent to employees in its HQ
building nearby.

Members of Westboro Baptist Church have announced plans to picket the
following venues in the metro area:

Saturday, September 20

Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is a church headed by Fred Phelps and
based in Topeka, KS. The organization is monitored by the Anti-
Defamation League and is classified as a hate group by the Southern
Poverty Law Center. The church runs numerous websites expressing
condemnation of homosexuality, Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews, as
well as populations it believes are supporting the aforementioned
groups, including Chinese, Swedes, Canadians, Irish, British, Mexicans
and Americans. Although this group has been in existence for over
fifty years, they have gained recent notoriety for protests/pickets at
funerals of members of the armed forces killed in Afghanistan and
Iraq. They even protested during the funeral of Bill Gwatney last
month here in Little Rock.

We do not expect any problems to arise from these protests either at
The Stephens Building or The Capital Hotel but our security staff has
taken necessary precautions and will be prepared to handle any issue
that may occur. We have confirmed that local and federal law
enforcement agencies are aware of the planned demonstrations and have
implemented plans to deal with the situation.

Emotions run high during protests by this group due to the rhetoric
and beliefs they espouse. Please keep the following in mind:

• Avoid the protest and protestors altogether – don’t give them the
audience they desire
• Do not engage protestors or their supporters in conversation
• Do not heckle, harass or attempt to “out protest” the pr
That is fantastic. I would like to buy them a pasta dinner the next
time I'm in Little Rock.

Oh wow...made my day/week/month. Hats off to wonderful people taking a
hilarious stand against ignorant hateful fools. A world full of these
folks would be...a great improvement!

I had no idea that the Phelps scam people were in town today. (Been
traveling lately and not keeping up with AT as often)

But my dad always brings up the "Leveticus Abominations" as proof that
his 70 years as a Catholic were an embarressment. He says as Catholics
you are never pushed to read the Bible but just let the church tell
you what you need to know. That is because anyone that really read it
would throw their hands up in discust and become a peaceful agnostic.

The reason I call them the Phelps Scam people is because their whole
livelyhood is derived from being obnoxious and getting their asses
whooped and then suing the individual whoopers and the police
departments which failed to protect them as they exercize their
freedom of speech.

This is seriously about the coolest thing ever! I hope it makes the
national news.
Somebody needs to drop off a couple of bottles of rum for these guys.
Well played!

Little kiddies recruited by their parents held up the following signs:

"Thank God For Ike"

"Pray For More Dead Soldiers"

Not that these swine deserve any attention, but the "adults" sure
seemed preoccupied on their cell phones the whole time they were
"protesting". Wonder what they were talking about...

"Oh, you should just SEE little Bobby. Never been so proud in my life,
the way he's dragging that American flag all over the ground. Just
like I told him to! And little Marlene... God Bless her, she's only
six, but I really think those Jim Jones videotapes we've been watching
with them are really starting to sink in. You can just...... see it in
their little eyes."

Damn it's hard to find real heroes in this day and age, but I'm
looking at a picture of authentic Arkansas heroes at the top of this
thread. Though you can't see it, I am bowing to you from the left side
of the state. You may have just figured out the only way to truly
stick it to the Phelps gang. Bravo!

And why didn't I think of this before? The incorrect way to fight the
Phelps is to deny them free speech, one of the best things about
America-AT&T. The correct way to fight the Phelps is using your right
to join them on the same sidewalk with your brand of free speech.
Might this same tactic work at abortion clinics? McCain looked pretty
stupid and pissed the other day when he visited a Detroit auto plant
and was greeted with a mass of workers screaming Obama 08 Obama 08!

Yes yes Lord! My eyes have been opened! If McCain or Palin ever come
to Fort Baptist I'll not go try to shout them down....I'll fix a big
sign saying Bridge to My Anus! Or God Hates McShrimp!
And it goes on.... but that's enough, eh mate? Doc
I feel a tad sniffled myself. But never mind feelings... they just get in the way.
